A glimpse iat a small part of the life of a turkey

Post by Treerooster »

A lot of the fun in hunting for me is getting to know as much as I can about the animal I am hunting. Whether it helps me in pursuing that animal doesn’t matter, I just like to figure out what its life is like.
Of course the wild turkey is one of my favorite birds to hunt and I pluck a lot of the ones I bag. I have discovered a lot of scars on turkeys and have only plucked one bird that did not have any. Like tracks on the ground those scars can tell a part of the story of a bird’s life.

It seems turkeys lead a pretty rough and tumble life.

This gobbler completely lost one spur.

A fairly typical fight scar.

An old wound that is healed up.

Here is a bird with a stick stuck in it. Only about ¼ inch of the stick is showing, the rest is in the bird.

This shows how much of the stick was in the bird. He seemed to walk normal when he came in.

A pretty good gash on a leg of another gobbler. I would think it was made by another bird’s spur from fighting.

These next 4 pics are all from 1 bird I call the “Warrior”. Or maybe “Big Jim” after a line in a Jim Croce song that goes “He was cut in about a 100 places, and shot in a couple more…” :D

Broken foot.

Pretty deep cut on breast.

Some nicks and cuts on the legs.

Nicks on the back and a pretty good bruise.

May I assume you're not here to inquire about the alcohol or the tobacco?

Cool stuff. A lot of them could tell some unbelievable stories, if they could talk of course.
