Spring of 2014 (picture heavy)

Post by HartClemson99 »

Well, my season ended the week before last on the last day of Colorado's season. I watched my buddy miss two big Merriam's to end the season. I posted these pictures on SCDucks.com the week before last, but I figured I'd share it on here as well. My season began back on February 22nd during the Florida youth season. I hunted every weekend but one for 3 months and many days in between. I'm excited to get back to civilized life, but sad to see another season in the books. I had a great season with lots of non turkey related life dealings which kept me out of the woods: spending a week in Germany, resigning from my job, moving and starting a new company in the middle of chasing turkeys. Regardless, my season was pretty terrific and it took me to 8 states and 1 western Indian Reservation where I tagged out in 5 of those states (and the Rez) and ate tag soup in 2 of them.

The highlights of my season were a Double Single Season Slam using my late buddy J. Guthrie's turkey gun: His gun ended up taking 11 birds (by 4 of his friends) this spring and I hope it was a fitting tribute to my hunting buddy. http://www.petersenshunting.com/2013/04 ... s-guthrie/

I ended up killing 14 turkeys, saw 25 die, saw 9 misses/wounded (including two of my own) and made boot tracks across some of the pretiest country I have seen with some great friends (new and old). I finished my 16ga Grand Slam with a great Texas Rio, began my bearded hen slam with a 8" bearded hen in Texas and started my .410 grand slam with a long spurred SC bird. With the help of Hal and other folks on this site, I killed my first bird with a shell I handloaded and about 5 of my buddies killed a pile of birds with TSS shells I built.

I don't have pictures of every bird, but here are some of my favorites. I'm already planning for 2015, God willing, I'll be starting in Florida, heading to Mexico to try to finish my World Slam and hopefully adding a few new states to my US Slam list.

Thanks again to everyone for the guidance on teaching me the world of handloading!

Then there are us that can only get one bird per year in our home states, two if you live in the area where 2 are legal but when you live 400 miles from that area it just doesn't make a lot of sense to travel that far for 1 more bird.
