In Bland County VA.With the Kentucky restoration program and VA now joining in, I'd sure like to hunt one on my home turf soon.

Is there a season on elk? How did he kill it legally if there isn't one? Very cool..
May I assume you're not here to inquire about the alcohol or the tobacco?

I think Virgina could not stop folks from shooting the Elk that came over the State line. The is no closed or open season for Elk in Virgina. He shot it during the deer season.

That would get you fined, big time, in Wi. If there is no season on the animal, you can't kill it. It would be like killing a moose up here. We have a few, but no season.. Every now and then, someone moron mistakes one for a whitetail..

This what I found on the Virgina department of wildlife and inland fisherys web site. "Hunters killing an elk are required to validate an appropriate deer tag." So you must be able to hunt the elk that come over the line and tag them with your deer tag. Well you do not tag the elk you just punch the dee tag.

Here is another statement I found. "Elk of either sex, antlered or antlerless, may be taken during any open deer season using the firearms legal for deer during that season, except that elk season is closed in the counties of Buchanan, Dickenson, and Wise.
The taking of an elk counts towards the hunter's daily and license year bag limit for deer.
Licenses, tag validation, and checking requirements for elk are the same as for deer except that elk must be checked at a check station.
It is unlawful to destroy the identity (sex) of any harvested elk until checked. Elk may be dismembered to pack it out from the place of kill. The identity of the sex and all parts of the carcass must be present when the elk is checked.
Successful hunters, upon checking an elk, must contact the Department's Dispatcher at 804-367-1258 to schedule the collection of biological samples for disease testing."

Awesome. I believe that I would be elk hunting during deer season. That is a great deal. You would think that they would try and get a sustainable herd before they start whacking them, though.
