Sweet Home Alabama
Sweet Home Alabama
Buddy and I made it to Bama and had a great trip. We fought some henned up birds and cold mornings. He had more interactions than I and killed two good birds.
I had some interactions but things were slow. Did not hear a gobble this morning and went to camp early. Sat around and decide to go back at 11:00. Was just going to do light calling on the side of a plot in the pines.
Sat for about 30 minutes when I swore I heard drumming in the field. Looked but did not see anything. About 10 minutes later I look behind me and see a longbeard feeding on grasshoppers. I watched him as he worked across the plot and into the pines to my right.
I yelped and I heard spitting and drumming. He worked around in the pines and popped out in a hole. Was too far to shoot. Shut up let him walk away and then waited 10 minutes. Got up and ran to tree that he stopped at. Set up and yelped. I hear him walking and drumming. He gets closer. I yelp and then scratch leaves. He struts and drums. I go silent except scratching leaves. He comes in searching so I lay the hammer. Never heard a gobble today but the spitting and drumming was just fine.

I was in Pickens Co. off the Sipsey River, East of Aliceville. Those Bama birds were something else and I honestly did not expect them to have the beard length they had cause of the environment. I thought average would be around 9.5" which in the three birds we took it was 10.5". My buddies two birds both weighed 17.5 lbs so I was surprised when I lifted mine and then put him on the scale and he was 21. It was a lot of fun!
