It has been the weirdest duck year ever for us.. Duck numbers throughout the U.S. are through the roof except for our Great Lakes Mallards which are down 46 percent.. Normally throughout the fall we have numerous great field mallard hunts but this year has been an exception where we are lucky to scrap a few down..
The weekend was very good for us killing geese.. Sat night I found geese in a field they had been in and out of for a week around 800.. To my suprise their was a pile of mallards working the field as well..
Sunday morning found us in the cornfield.. With overcast skies the lighting was dim.. At shooting light the mallards appeared by the hundreds.. We each shot into the first flock and counted our hens (only 1 hen in MI).. We were near our hen limit so I gave the orders to only shoot green.. As hundreds of mallards literally landed on the blinds, you could only see green when it was too late.. So throughout the morning we managed a drake out of this flock, a drake out of that flock etc.. Lord know what we could have killed had we just cut into them.. We ended up with 19 mallards 1 shy of our limit..
The geese decided to hit another field.. We have another closure until this weekend where we have our final days. .Praying we dont freeze..
Finally some mallards
