Any Idea What May have Been wrong with My Buddys Deer.?

Post by redarrow »

Just got off the phone with my bud in Ky. He shot a 12 pointer opening day. It was kinda skinny and his spine was pretty evident with his ribs showing too. No fat at all. It had a puncture it it lower rear leg that was oozing a yellow liquid that looked like jello. As he started skinning it out this yellow fluid continued to ooze from under the flesh and even dripped on the ground. He cut the rack off and the brain was full of the same stuff. Needless to say he disposed of the meat rather than eat it. Any ideas guys.

Wow. That's nasty, red. I don't really know. Maybe he got shot, survived the wound and the infection spread to his brain. It is possible. I hope he was wearing gloves when he skinned it out.
Another possibility might be CWD. I have never heard what that disease looks like in it's end stage, but that's possible given the emaciated condition of the animal. I would've contacted my state deer biologist.

He may or may not want to contact the DNR.. May, probably the right thing to do, could be something severe they need to know about or something minor that would ease his mind in eating future deer in that area.. He may not want to, as it may be something severe and may lead to major regulation changes in his area.

What he said... I'd call the DNR.

As I said though he may not want to.. We found TB in a few county area in our state.. Thus doe permits are unlimited up there.. Essentially the deer herd has been wiped out up there for something that has occurred in our state forever..

yellow puss is from the deer being fevered badly

I shot one years ago that had no beam shooting out with tines sticking up...he had a broken brow, and a huge tine that was split going straight up. He had no protection on that side, and was gored severely.

Stunk to high heaven and was "un-edible"

Bovine tb characteristics are a lot of lesions and pus throughout the deer. There is a lymph node that can fill full of it in the head as well. Could be along the lines of that..

TB would show numerous lesions on the inner walls of the chest cavity. This deer didn't have those.
