First fall bird

Post by pedro »

Went out twice this weekend and got lucky and scored on my first fall bird. I wish I could say it was a gobbler but...since hens are legal and beggars can't be choosers. It was nice being in the fall woods, the colors are near peak and beautiful. Yesterday I busted one out of the roost early. Then heard two clucks about ten, never saw the bird. Today around seven fifteen a flock of birds came my way and I took the first head I saw. I will be doing some more turkey hunting this season, I will try to hold out for a gobbler.

Nope. I live in Illinois. Bird was taken in central Wisconsin. In the heart of packer country. I am glad that don't have a bear season there, lol.

That's what it sounds like to me. The one he shot was the day after he "busted one out of the roost."

I meant bumped. I have had many chances to shot one out of a tree, it is legal. For me the hunt is the best part and I will not limb lift a turkey. What has happened the past few hunt is I am waiting to see if I can hear anything fly down, after the sun comes up I will start to make my way through the woods. This is when I am bumping/busting them from trees. It seems to late in the morning for them to be still in the trees but....if I could figure them out what fun would it be. :D

Pedro,

This bow season i have been in my tree stand and have heard the turkeys on the roost. They seem to be staying on the roost late every morning I have hunted. I notice some of them staying in the tree up to an hour after daylight. Some would fly down about normal time but it seemed they would fly down at different times. I was hearing tree yelps and fly down cackles up to 845 Am. :dontknow:

I am pretty excited this year because I have never hunted in the fall and found a major roost area like this. I am hoping to kill a gobbler when shot gun is legal in November.
