Old School Remington
The history behind this beauty. It has seen 22 presidents since 1889, and was passed down to me from my great-great-great grandfather who murdered a guy with this gun for beating his horse. He fled to Canada to live out the rest of his days as a fugitive from the U.S. law.
1889 Remington 12 gauge Side by Side Hammer shotgun. It is marked REMINGTON ARMS CO, ILION,N.Y. U.S.A. on the rib. It is marked REMINGTON ARMS CO. on both sides of the lock. It has 30" damascus steel barrels. It has checkered pistol grip and forend. Old School yes indeed. Sure she is a little Rugged but I love it nonetheless.

That would be a beautiful piece to have restored for display over a Fireplace
For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. Romans 1:20

Re: Old School Remington
That is my intention now that i have it. My father gave it to me this year so I didn't have to wait for the inheritance to get the ball rolling. I am afraid a restore might do more damage than good but i don't know anything about the process. I want to get it restored but haven't shopped around yet for the place to get it done.gblack15 wrote:That would be a beautiful piece to have restored for display over a Fireplace

Re: Old School Remington
I'd have to kill a turkey with it before retiring it to the fireplace.

I dont reload or I would try it.guesswho wrote:I'd have to kill a turkey with it before retiring it to the fireplace.
The Damascus barrels take a certain load and I am not sure what it is. not the usual manufactured load or the thing may blow up. Would love to kill a bird with this thing but too scared to mess things up.

Sweet old double..
I'd leave her just like she is.

Nice old gun ! If only it could talk !
Re: Old School Remington
Damascus barrels were once widely considered unfit for smokeless ammo. It is now believed that this school of thought arose from gun manufacturers who were marketing steel barrels and wanted folks to "upgrade". There is a dedicated cadre of Damascus barrel hunters shooting high grade damascus guns. Damascus barreled shotguns are no longer considered inferior double guns. There have been modern tests, most notably by Sherman Bell, who tested Damascus. As long as there are no deep pits in the barrels, the guns can be safely shot with low pressure smokeless powder. Here are two manufacturers of low pressure loads: RST and Polywad. I would have the gun checked out. It may be more than a wall hanger. It's up to you if you want to test its Karma. www.doublegunshop.com (the general forum) has a lot of expertise that can provide suggestions about the gun. Full restorations can be damned expensive running more than you can imagine.

That is a beaut. Don't refinish it.
Put you plans in the nail scarred hands.

Re: Old School Remington
You might consider steps to preserve, but I wouldn't think of restoring.

Wipe her down and buff her up with renaissance wax.
