Turkey for Thanksgiving

Post by Hobbes_mobile »

I hadn't really planned this when I bought the turkeys, but decided to slaughter my two jakes. I wasn't terribly attached to them, but still didn't look forward to killing them. Once I picked them up and hung them, I waisted no time with cutting and bleeding. At that point they were no different than any other dead turkey except Plucking them. Plucking is the worst part, especially the wings. They were a lot bigger than I thought. The big one was 36 lbs and the other 27 lbs (without head and feathers). Hopefully they won't be tough since they aren't old birds, but dangit it'll be the biggest Thanksgiving turkey I've cooked. The smaller of the two was given to a friend.

Both photos are the big guy.

I hope that ol’ Jake is going to be tender, but I’m thinking that even the gravy is gonna be tough!
May I assume you're not here to inquire about the alcohol or the tobacco?

I'm going to brine the heck out of it, cram a couple sticks of butter under the skin and cook in a bag (if the bag is big enough)........and hope for the best. :D :D :toothy7:

They didn't like the turkeys so were probably glad to see them go, but they were not too sure about how everything went down. I think they assisted the foxes that killed all of my chickens back in the summer. Guard llamas my ........ :D :D :D

Hobbes.. Your turkey story reminds my of something that happened a few years back. My cousin and his wife had a small hobby farm in upper Wi. They had a couple of donkeys, chickens, a calf or two and possible a pig. They ate their own eggs and occasionally butchered an animal to eat.
Well, one day their pet Rottweiler died suddenly.
Just dropped in it’s tracks. Everyone was balling their eyes out when Lily, their 4ish year old daughter, says “It’s ok. She’ll taste good when we eat her”!!! Out of the mouth of babes!
No guff...

Many moons ago Hobbes, my wife had a Walking Horse have an unexpected foal and the neighbor's 2 horses eyes were really bugged out as they watched.
This pic really didn't capture the eyes as they were, when the lil' one was on the ground with the placenta sac over it's head yet :LMAO: :LMAO:
