Re: New Puppy
Can't go wrong with a Boykin Spaniel. I have owned one since 1979. Best breed around, anything else is just a dog !!!
Re: New Puppy
Agreed. I have had dogs my entire life and I do believe Finley (also a Boykin) is the smartest dog that I have ever owned. Crazy, but extremely intelligent. This little pup is Finley's nephew.

Re: New Puppy
Boykins are awesome! I use my little girl to flush and retrieve quail over my bird dogs. And retireve summer ducks while it is warm. Put her up and let my Lab do the hard, cold work later in the season. Pups make us appreciate everyday. Have fun!

They sure are cute little buggers!!
May I assume you're not here to inquire about the alcohol or the tobacco?

Re: New Puppy
I'm hoping Finley helps bring him along a little faster than training went with her. Finley is actually very well behaved and she has a great "off switch".soiltester wrote: ↑November 24th, 2019, 7:12 am Neat lookin' lil' guy and sure hope you can get it taught, before Finley does

Re: New Puppy
Get the book by Richard Wolters, "Water Dog". That is what I trained all my Boykins by.
Re: New Puppy
Yes, that's a great book. I used it for a couple of Labs in the past.Eagle-Dawgs wrote: ↑November 24th, 2019, 10:31 am Get the book by Richard Wolters, "Water Dog". That is what I trained all my Boykins by.

Re: New Puppy
I have to stay away from puppies at least until we are down to 2 bird dogs.
Great looking pup.

Re: New Puppy
Mike, I have a 3.5 years spread between my older Britt Abby and her half sister Willa. I think you'll find it easier to train the new pup on the block than Finley. After teaching Willa to come and "whoa", Abby taught her the rest by example in the field. Gil

Re: New Puppy
It's easier owning two then one and the way you did it is right. Finley will teach um everything, boundaries, where to poop etc Plus they entertain themselves and you don't have to.As you well know give equal attention, jealousy is worse in dogs than women lol I'll be interested to hear when you bring him home Finley reaction, either what the bleep is this or play a more nurturing role.
I wouldn't mind a bird dog we have a robust grouse population and get a big woodcock migration

Re: New Puppy
I'm curious too as to Fin's reaction. Fin has already met him cause we took her when we made the pick. I've read on the subject of introducing a puppy into a home with an older dog and all the "experts" seem to agree that it's best to do the meet and greet at a neutral sight and then walk them home together. We will do that...can't hurt.
I feel like Fin will be really jealous, at first, but she's too friendly to sustain it. We'll see.

Re: New Puppy
When I brought my Finn home a few years ago I expected the older male to hate him and the younger female to want to play non-stop. The female had no interest, but the old male turned into a puppy again and wanted to play all the time. It still seems backwards.
Re: New Puppy
In addition to the above, I would not leave the two together the first month or so without your supervision. Also, feed them separated from each other. Re: New Puppy
Another beautiful pup, one close hunting flush dog and one turkey dog, what a country.
Re: New Puppy
Beautiful pup, should make for a great companion at the house and in the field.
