They were lucky. 1 did smack the hen but that was about it for her.

Hopefully Big Boy crosses "The Zone" tomorrow!!

Day1, 04/22, of the 2019 Ohio Spring Turkey Season.

I wasn’t sure I was going out this morning as I have been feeling puny for a
couple of weeks as well as, based on last year, the prospects weren’t looking
good. I still wasn’t sure as I headed out the door at 05:30 A.M.. When I got
to the north edge of the woods, an owl sounded off to the NW & 1 responded
from the SE. I was in the woods & ready to go at 06:00 with a temp of 44,
clear skies with some stars, & a ¾ moon. When I got to the edge of the woods,
an owl sounded off to the NW & 1 responded from the SE.

At about 6:20, I saw something large &dark for a split second along the south
edge of the woods but couldn’t tell what it was & didn’t see it again. I thought
I heard a couple of gobbles to the far west but couldn’t tell for sure. I made a
few tree calls & got a response to the west. He gobbled a couple of times.

At 6:35, the 3 Amigos came running in to the dekes & killed Fred while Wilma
did nothing to protect him. She did take a shot but that was it. I though about
taking 1 but 2 things stopped me: 1. I knew there were at least 2 gobblers
behind me that might come in; 2. They never separated enough for a clear shot
on 1 head. At 06:45, 1 gobbled to the west closer than before. Hope springs
eternal!! The Gang of 3 hung around until 07:10 when there was a fairly close
gobble. The jakes started to putt & did wander off.

I made a few calls & got 2 responding behind me which sounded like they were
near the other side of the woods at 07:25. The Gang had returned to the south
side of the woods &, every time the birds behind me gobbled, all 3 of them gobbled
back. I was caught in the middle of a Battle of the Gobbles. The gobblers behind
me wouldn’t come in & eventually shut up. I think they might have been intimidated
by the 3 jakes.

The jakes came back in front of me & really put on a show, preening, strutting, &
gobbling. If the gang leader had known how close he was to riding home with me,
I don’t think he would have been acting so boisterous & flamboyant. This went on
until 08:50 when they started heading west gobbling all the way. The last gobble was
at about 09:10 & they were in the next section of the woods. I have never had 1 bird,
let alone 3 gobble as much as these 3. There wasn’t much more than a couple of
minutes between gobbles if that much.

It was funny watching them flog ole Fred, I have 2 30 second videos of the beat down
& 5 with them admiring their handy work. They rolled him about 5’ from where he was staked.

I hope to try for the Big Boy tomorrow.

We can only hunt until noon this week, then all day for the last 2 weeks.

As I mentioned, I haven't felt too good for awhile & pretty bad this morning so I stayed
in & went to the Doc. Got some muscle relaxants & anti-inflammatory drugs. Hopefully
I'll be good to go in the morning.
