A Few More Ducks & Geese Plus a Squirrel

Post by HunterGKS »

There was only 1 pair of geese & 2 pair of Mallards on the drive home today but
they did let me take a few pics. The geese got real belligerent & started honking
like crazy.

If you look closely at this pic, you can see grass in their mouths.

They started to move to the water with 1 flying to open water & the other walking across the ice.

The walking goose broke through the ice & struggled to get to open water.

The water must have been fairly shallow at this point as the larger bird (gander?)
seems to be standing rather than floating.

There was 2 pair of Mallards near the geese but these are the same pair.

The 2nd drake.

1 hen & 2 drakes.

Up, up, & away went 2 hens & a drake.

A pair on the wing.

There were 2 squirrels at the end of the road but only 1 would pose &, for some reason, I didn’t get focused on any of the pics.

Thx. I wish I would have gotten pics when the ice broke as the goose did a lot of wing flapping.
It was pretty funny.

A few years ago as I was leaving the turkey woods, there was a pair in the field
I had to 4-wheel past. They had 1 gosling. I got off the 4-wheeler & started
taking pics. Mom & pop didn't like that at all!! The goose herded her baby
away while the gander came after me, hissing, honking, wings flared, & running.
He would have done me harm if I hadn't backed off. They are belligerent as well
as badass!!

Belligerent is a nice description of Canada geese, and probably all of them. Reminds me of years ago I attended an Extension conference in Detroit and we went out to some "farm/park" type place away from the urban area which had a golf course. One of the issues was that there were resident Canada geese that took over the lakes creating some real water hazards. Not to mention "fouling" the greens and fairways, and being aggressive toward golfers at times. Since control is fairly limited to air cannons, etc. Someone came up with the idea of putting a Swan in the course. The geese left and didn't come back. "Bio-control", but don't get two or you'll have the same problem.
