Air rifle recommendations for my soon to be 4 year old
Air rifle recommendations for my soon to be 4 year old
Trying to get my youngest shooting this year. He wants to do everything I do. I figured a good BB or pellet gun would be a good choice to teach marksmanship fundamentals, but don't know how easy it will be to find something he can shoot. The smallest air rifles I've seen are Daisy Red Rider style BB guns. We've got one of these, but the trigger is really stiff for little hands. Before somebody hits me up with the "You'll shoot your eye out!" reference, I'll drop it here.
Thanks

been a while since I have shot any air rifles. had a crossman that was a break open and had olympic style sights. shot great and was accurate. no idea what happened to it..

Been looking around and think it may be easier to get a .22 rather than an air rifle that actually will fit him and a useable trigger. I'll keep listening and looking for a little while.

A lot depends on how much you want to spend. I have heard nothing
but positives about Gamo. It couldn't hurt to check them out to see
if they have any models that can start out "child-sized" & be changed to
"adult-sized" as your young un grows up.

If you do go with a 22 i second the Keystone Cricket.
They make a slew of 22’s and 17’s

Gamo is a great air gun. I shoot critters year around with mine. Downfalls are they are long and fairly heavy and the triggers are pretty horrible..
May I assume you're not here to inquire about the alcohol or the tobacco?

The Red Ryder has a heavy spring to return the trigger to the reset position. If you disconnect it the trigger is much easier to pull. The downside is you sometimes have to push the trigger back to reset it. Every kid should have one.
The Aguila Super Colibri .22 rimfire ammo is stopped by a pellet rifle pellet trap. My daughter loves it in her Keystone 722. It even cycles out of the mag in that gun. If you go 22, I suggest a regular bolt action repeater with a youth length stock. Being able to hold the gun up doesn't really matter because learning good shooting will always be from a rested aim for the next several years.
I would get the BB gun or an airsoft gun. I let my boy take the BB gun, or his airsoft AR, out away from the house and shoot a turkey decoy with it, without supervision. I would never let him do that with a 22lr.

I'd get him a CZ 452 Scout .22 Shoot CB longs in it and it's more quiet than a break-barrel pellet gun. They are really small and a perfect starter gun. Generally the smaller air rifles are not very accurate from what I've seen. The CZ is very accurate. I think accuracy is important when teaching a kid to shoot. A child will have a lot more fun if he/she is able to hit what they are shooting at.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll check all those options out. Definitely going to look into the trigger spring on our daisy to see if that will work. I'll let you k ow how it goes. Might just do a .22 and an air rifle.

I concur on the CZ’s. The CZ 452 or 455 are crazy accurate. GREAT little rifles for the price. I have a 455 American and it shoots lights out at 50’.

My vote would be for a break action 177 pellet rifle. Less deadly than 22 rimfire and lead pellets don’t ricochet like bb’s.

On a side note, those CB Longs that I recommended are only 710 fps which is less than most air rifles. They are pretty safe to shoot in most situations...and they will kill rabbits and squirrels.
