Montana Season was Short

Post by Grumpy »

I left the house at 3 am. this morning and got to the ranch I hunt on at 4:45am. I tacked on a piece of camo burlap on the corner of a corral fence around a hay yard and parked the truck behind the hay yard fence and a round bailer that was there. At5:08 am while sitting in the truck with the window down I heard the first gobble coming from some tall pine trees about 300 yrds. west of me. After a few more gobbles I figured it was 2 toms sounding off while still in the roost. I went to sit behind my camo screen on the stool my grandson got me for Christmas, it is a Cabellas with a swivel seat and works like a charm for getting on aim point with the birds this morning. After about 30 mins. I heard gobbling coming from the east over the hill so I would do a few yelps and always got an answer. Soon 3 Toms showed up on the ridge about 100 yrds north and up from where I sat, they started down the side of the hill until they got halfway down then all 3 decided to jump and fly the rest of the way down into the 3 decoys I had out. The 2 larger ones stayed just a bit too far out, it was one of those maybe shots and I don't like to try to pull those off unless I have the Escort 12 ga., so I settled for the 20 yard away bird which was a 2 yr. old with a 7 in. beard and 1/2 in. spurs and weighed in at 16lb. 2 oz. It took the wrath of my "Little Buddys" 870 youth model that I did a few things to in order to make it a turkey killing gun. The Federal Heavyweight 7's dropped it where it stood and it made just a few flops. My season and hunting time was less than an hour and a half so now I'm done for the year as I don't have time to go to others areas of the state where the limit is a few more.

I know but it's like fishing, when ya got a honey hole that's the place to go, parts of the state have more than a one turkey limit but this is a big state and I just don't have the time to go .

Congrats Grumpy. You need to do some driving and kill a couple more birds in other regions.

Grumps, did your blind have a satellite tv connection to help pass the time away while the turkey met his appointment of doom? A half hour is a long wait. ;) Gil

I tried that for 5 yrs. over near Kalispell on the KM Ranch road, turkeys behind every blade of grass and all private wit no access permission no matter how hard you beg. The couple of chunks of state land had 2 hunters behind every blade of grass, not for me and I was with a well know business man from Kalispell who did rock work for most of the people living down that road. Headed to Big Fork and got the same NO response from other land owners, so I will stay home and the Glendive area at 300 plus miles is to far for me to go just to kill one more bird.

Great story and Congrats. That's a heck of a drive to get there, but proves to be well worth it. I would shoot that bird all day long..........season is sucking for me here in VA!

You definitely have a hot spot in the ol corral. Congrats sir...you got your little buddy’s 870 looking good.
I was hoping you did a selfie with your turkey this year. Maybe next year.
