I mounted the fan beard skull and spurs for the youth hunter that got his first bird. I worked on it a little after work each day and finally got done Wednesday. I’ve never done this so it’s my first. I’ve done the spurs and beard for myself but never done a skull or fan and everythang on a plaque. I think it turned out good. He should be tickled.

Looks good. He will probably keep that from now on. He'll tell everybody yeas from. Is when he's looking at it that some crazy old man helped him kill his first turkey.

Thanks guys. 👍🏻 Hope he keeps it forever ronnie and tells that story your talkin bout. I sure was proud. Wish I had somebody at his age do that for me but I didn’t. But again would it be the same for me. I don’t know but I’m glad it’s happened the way it’s happened 👍🏻

How about a tutorial on how you cleaned the skull? I have a skull with the neck attached in the freezer that I'd like to clean & display.

I probaly did it the hard way but I cut everything off the skull the day of. Most of it. The beak is sensitive it is like the spurs it’s got a cap on it I took them off. I boiled just enough to make the meat cut off better. I took my air nozzle to my compressor and blew the brain cavity out. Took my dremel the next day polished it up and got rest of the gunk off of it. I super glued the bottom beak back to the top one and spray painted it white and then spray a clear coat over that.

I've done the skull before and I just let it rot under a bucket for about a week. Maggots get most of the stuff. Then rot the rest in a bucket of water for a month or so until the rest turns loose. Then soak in peroxide for a few days to bleach it. Superglue the little bones back together. Beetles are the best but I didn't want to buy any. Turned out good. Image

Thx. My taxman used to have dermestid beetles. I may check with him & see how much he'd charge me to give his bugs a free lunch if he still has them. I'll probably stick a wire up through all the vertebra to keep them in order no matter I how I do it.
