MT East to West

Post by hobbes »

I've been on the road a lot lately traveling between Eastern and Western Montana. There is a big difference between the two, but both areas hold a few turkeys. (Maybe not in the higher reaches. :D )

An Eastern MT riverbottom that will remain unnamed where I fruitlessly listened for gobbles last week.

I'm a little concerned about how the birds held up in my eastern MT areas with the snow they got this yr.

Hobbes, you are fortunate to live in such beautiful country. I’m a flat lander but have been chasing elk and deer across your state for the last 15 years. The Big Hole River valley, the Crazies, Boulder River drainage, the Breaks. Have had lots of highs and lows. Getting close to retiring and might have more time for a spring trip to chase a turkey or two.

Blowing again today, blows all the barbs on the barb wire fences down to the corner posts and then the hay seed farmers got to send their kids out to slide all the barbs back up the wires where they belong. Main reason the kids don't want to take over the farms, most time around these Montana farms is spent sliding barbs..... :angry5:

I shut the gate behind me when I moved here, but apparently someone got it open and has left it that way. I do love Montana for what it is (maybe was in some cases), unlike some folks that move here and want to make it like "back home".

Coming from the crowded east coast I appreciate what MT is still. I really don't understand why someone would want to move here and bring what they left with them.

It's the same everywhere. I moved to a small town in GA, because I like small Southern towns. Fools just want to turn it into a suburb of a city for progress and profit. They aren't making any more small towns. They aren't making any more wide open spaces.

If it keeps snowing (it is at this very moment) we may get rid of some of the fair weather transplants.

That would be wonderful if all the Calipornistans would do a reenactment of the Donner Party.. :turkeywave:

Hey hobbes, heavy snow here this morning and it sounds like it is coming down state wide and most places haven't hardly melted from record snow falls, my question is, do you prefer the snowshoes over cross country skis ?

Snow and Ice in Helena this morning. I had to drive to Hungry Horse in it today. Good fresh coat of snow through the Seeley-Swan and 4 or 5" new snow on project site. I'll be staying in Kalispell so supposed to see more during the week. Opener should be interesting.

I'm a snowshoe guy, but they're awfully noisy for turkey hunting.
