Experts .. What Is It??

Click on the hen's head to enlarge the pic. and tell me what kind of growths she has??

She's been a loner all spring and has an unusually dark blue head with all those large growths on her upper heck & head area.

Kind of unique and ugly in it's own way :?

She must hop around a lot. Probably some kind of tumor or maybe something penetrated her neck & became abscessed.

Right in line with the other one ... it isn't any worse than the original pic.

Wish the toms around here were 1 legged, like that would matter :stir:

I looked it up and it can be carried and transferred by mosquitos and barn flies, looks pretty nasty to me.

1 legged avian pox infested hen. I looked it up. That’s what I found. It also says that a gobbler will still breed her cause some don’t care (just like humans) and she will still lay eggs and raise them 👍🏻

pox it is. I killed a hen with my bow some years back, in the fall  , that looked like that, the only turkey I've killed with my bow. I was deer hunting, disturbed a flock going in, they started calling, I whistled her in. I think the pox may have helped in her not seeing me draw .... :D .....and she was tasty as I recall...

It is not necessarily avian pox. There are other conditions that cause that. I killed a gobbler last year that had growths like that and a foot that was badly infected. I assumed pox but contacted TWRA and they took the head and sent it off for testing. The report is below.

Here’s one I sent off last year for a necropsy, came back confirmed as pox.

Thanks for the info gang!! Must be what the gal has.
I really thought she was one of last springs hens and don't know for sure if she's settin' or not.
The other hen came in late yesterday with her to feed at the bird feeder and she was already there 3 or 4 times yesterday!!

In most cases, avian pox is most prevalent after the emergence of mosquitoes, the vector source, in the Spring. The pox is usually non-lethal in the "dry" form and may leave scabby lesions on the head, neck, or legs of infected birds at the bite sites. The pox is not spread from bird to bird, and once the infection has run it's course, the bird usually has a life-time immunity to the virus.

Quite interesting as we have very few skitters here, as it dries down early ;)
But then again, I don't know where this hen was all last summer .. fall .. and winter, till' she migrated back here to nest or be here, along with the other 4 hens I've seen ;)
