Does anybody hunt turkeys the "RIGHT " way??

Post by fountain »

From posts made of lately, I'm not sure how to hunt them anymore. Can't use decoys, can't fan, call too much, cq5nt cover ground towards a gobbler....I'm not hunting them right. How do I do it??

Can't cover ground towards a gobbler? I missed that one and am in trouble. Thats pretty much my m.o. Good thing others opinions don't bother me.

As long as it's legal, hunt however you want & ignore the naysayers. The only right way is the way each person wants to hunt. If it works for you & makes you happy, that's the right way.

I worry that turkey populations can’t withstand the new technology. Flir scopes , blinds , photo image decoys, shells that kill them at 80+ yards, better camo. On and on.

Good point. Like a lot of other things, turkey hunting has been dumbed down to where a first year hunter stands a good chance of killing a bird or if allowed multiple birds. I don't fault the guy for using whatever the local laws allow, but the reality is more birds die every year because of it. Technology has outgrown the bag limits in a lot of places. The 3 primary killers are calls, decoys, blinds. I'd be fine if they allowed you to use just one of the three, your choice. Some areas of the country a blind is worth more than the other two combined, and some areas they are a hindrance. But the laws now say you can use all three if you want to. So I don't fault anyone who does so.

Other than the Federal Heviweight 7's I guess I am pretty much still doing it old school. Still killing a bird when I go out too, I use a standard Remington full choke in the 20 gauge, none of the fancy named stuff, I figure it's a waste of money. Still put out 2 hen and 1 Jake Gobstopper decoys and I hide from a blind which consists of a piece of camo print burlap draped over a fence or whatever. I take 2 calls a long with me, a glass HR STRUT, Black Widow and a box call that sounds real good and smooth, always get the job done without any problems, now without starting an argument, if you need all that other crap and gun modifications you are missing out on most of the good times of the hunt IMO.

If you were doing it right, you wouldn't have to ask or defend. Or, more philosophically, if you were doing it right for you, you wouldn't care what anyone else thought of it.

I'm looking forward to seeing that, but I'm really afraid he may be giving ground too fast toward them and it's going to be labeled as wrong. I also believe he shoots shells that kill further than we should shoot

Keeping it real for me means that I can’t put the window down before the truck comes to a complete stop. Then I start blasting. If put the window down while I’m still moving, I feel like I’m cheating... :LMAO:

This year I'm going to lob some mortars into the area where my digital sound locating computer says he's roosting. I'll stroll in and find my trophy in the carnage.

Alli know is I will be chasing them in 7 or 8 states and one province again and I will use a blind for bow no blind for crossbow or shotgun lots of decoys and sometimes I'll even push the easy button and go gun chair and mouthcall but man it will all be too much fun and I hope I can put a big dent in the turkey population !!

Yup. If you don’t hunt the way I hunt then you’re not a real turkey hunter!!

I take what a lot of people say with a grain of salt when it comes to them telling others how to hunt.

Terrain is different all over the country

ways of hunting is going to be different in said terrains

with that being said...

if you hunt with a WaffleHouse hat on your gonna kill a lot more gobblers :LMAO:

I tried to hunt turkeys with stone arrowhead tipped arrows that I'd made, off a wood long bow that a friend of mine had built, with no blind, and minimal camo. Even though I came real close to connecting a couple of times and doing it the right way, I just couldn't get it done. Then, my shoulder was permanently injured in a vehicle wreck where it's not possible for me to shoot a bow, so I just had to go back to blasting 'em with Hevi shot through my SBE II. It sorta feels wrong, but, somehow, I'll find a way to get over it.

I hunt the way I grew up hunting. I grew up poor as **** and was damn glad to have a breakdown h&r 12g. hand me down turkey calls and #6 squirrel loads. I have nicer stuff now but still use the same basic essentials I learned to hunt with. I have bought 1 blind and the love triangle decoy set (cant even remember who made the love triangle) I never used either and gave both away still new in the box about 3 yrs after buying. had I started with these things I might be on the other side of the fence swinging at people like me. but, my friends, im damn proud that I learned the way I did.
on a liner note. my 2 best turkey hunting buddies both use blinds and decoys. they are fair with a call, descent woodsmen, and they usually kill a bird every year by themselves. youll never guess who they call when they want to fill the rest of their tags.
