How far do you drive

Post by howl »

How far do you drive to your lease? I declined an opportunity at a 3000 acre club recently on the basis that 50mi was farther than I'd drive very much. Could be I'm spoiled having plenty of land within half an hour. I really need to make the move to private land considering the way things are going and that I have young hunters to train up.

So..how far y'all drive?

Turkeys are getting more and more scarce in my area. A lot of them catch the black powder disease. Having to look further and further.

About 3 miles. It's not really a lease but I have sole hunting rights to both woods. All it costs
me is some home grown asparagus, a turkey breast, & whatever extra sausage I make.

I don't lease these farms, but I help out at two different horse farms that are about a mile apart in exchange for rights to hunt them. I tagged a bird off each farm last year. One is 8 miles from my driveway and the other is 7 miles away. This year I got rights to hunt a 230 acre tract that's 3 miles from my house.

As of last season a 300 yard walk behind the house on Easter morning, birds moved in when I left for college. Used to drive five minutes down the road when I went to school in the Cumberland Gap. Avg place now 20-30 min drive. Do have a couple properties I'll drive an hour or more for but they are worth it.

My lease is 25 miles from my front door.
Then there's an out of state trip every year.

50 miles one way to the Bear Paw Mtns. to a private ranch, usually I get it done opening day in the morning but some years it takes 2-3 trips out in the morning before one feels the wrath of the 20 gauge. But they always come in to check out the rubber hens sooner or later.

Shortest from home is about an hour, luckily I have some family places to stay close to a few of my options. I sometimes drive 2-3 hours from home in state.

If things go well and the landowner agrees it'll take all of 1 min. It's right in front of my neighborhood entrance. My other spots are less than 5 miles away.

I drive 50 mi to hunt quality public land in Fall and Spring. I also travel out of state and hunt public land. If you enjoy turkey hunting it's what you do.

25 miles as the crow flys. Takes 45 minutes all public ground but about 10 acres of private woods I have to hunt. 3000 of private for a fifty mile drive sounds good if it has birds.

Sometimes I just walk from the house. Most of the time I drive 15 minutes up to 1 hour. Just depends which place I want to hunt at the time. I do hunt NC and VA. Thats is one good thing about living close to the state line, different opening and closing dates. Bad thing is out of state license. I do have Lifetime Hunting License in both states but it only covers small game in VA. I still have to buy the Big Game Tags and a Black Powder License which cost about $120 or so.

Y'all drive all this without camping out? I guess I'm not so eat up with it as I thought.
