Season dates changing

Post by howl »

GA DNR sent out a survey to see if hunters would be OK with moving opening date of a large WMA to later in the season. The idea being that seasons are better if started during peak egg laying. As usual they got the dates wrong for that area, but at least they are trying. Are other states trying similar?

I think seasons should start after or have a break during peak breeding and egg laying, and some biologists agree, but most hunters seem to want a season that starts early and ends late.

If egg laying starts depending on daylight hours like the biologists figure then season dates should always remain close to the same time each year, Montana always opens the second Saturday of April until the third Sunday of May.

I've never hunted MT. I would bet peak egg laying is not the second Saturday of April. How far off?

For what it's worth I've been raising turkeys in the northern part of Alabama for 6 years or so and start getting eggs in latter Feb. Where I live the zone doesn't open until April 1 normally. Wouldn't be surprised if they don't move whole state closer to that date.

I'd be happy if MT changed to opening on the third Saturday in April and closing the fourth Sunday in May. Even better would be to stay with the second Saturday in April as opener and close on May 31st.
