Food Plots
Food Plots
First pc is from my wife's stand " The Promise Land" Next two are mine. "The Mouse House ". We went with buckwheat this year. The turkeys are tearing it up and the plots are thick with deer tracks too. Early doe season is Sept. 16-17.
Put you plans in the nail scarred hands.

Re: Food Plots
Holly Cow ... I can't even get mine to look like that Looking good and will be better with rains!!
I'm planting my 1 1/2 acres maybe at the end of next week, if the weather people are predicting rain Last 3 yrs they did and it didn't
If I don't get a quick emergence, then it looks like a lawn until the does drop in the spring Usually the deer are nocturnal or real close, by huntin' time!!
All I really hope is the turkeys show in the spring

Re: Food Plots
I hadn't planted buckwheat before. When I asked the fella at the feed store he recommended 50 lbs per acre. I didn't realize I had the seeder gate wide open and ended up putting 100 lbs on my wifes 1/2 acre plot.Man that stuff is thick.

Most up here plant early and disc now. Alternative to round up as it out competes weeds, and returns phosphorus I believe.soiltester wrote: ↑August 22nd, 2017, 4:12 pm Billie .. the guys I knew in Montcalm County, that planted buckwheat for seed resale, said in the light soils, it will even smother out and be dominate over quackgrass

Re: Food Plots
I wish I was able to plant in early August, but day temps are brutal here yet in the mid-90's & very dryICDEDTURKES wrote: ↑August 22nd, 2017, 7:44 pm Most up here plant early and disc now. Alternative to round up as it out competes weeds, and returns phosphorus I believe.
For the most part, it doesn't sound like you've been blessed with much rain yet either, but if it's up and going, it'll be there with cooler temps
To my knowledge, clovers & alfalfa readily put "N" back into the soil while other covers, crops, only put what nutrients that are left in the plant after seed(crop) removal, but I'm sure there are a few that do ad a bit more, but no more than the plant takes in
That being said, just fall seed alfalfa, and early frosts will take the annual weed competition out
