It isn’t everyday you find 1 of these in your kitchen sink!!

Post by HunterGKS »

I picked up a baking dish & found this common brown bat between the dish & the back of the sink. I took a couple of pics & started to pick it up when it raised its head!!!! I have to admit that I jumped back & squeaked a little. I got it into a small container & moved it to the railing of my deck. When I took the pics from the front, its ears perked up when the camera clicked so at least its hearing seems to be OK.

I checked it a few minutes ago & it had turned around so it was facing the door & moved under 1 of the post caps. I used to have a lot of bats in my barn (NO NOT BELFRY!!!!) but I haven’t seen 1 in several years. How this 1 got into the house & how long it’s been inside is a mystery.

I’ll keep an eye on it &, hopefully, it will recover. Bats are very beneficial & I will never harm 1 on purpose.

If I was the cameraman, that next to the last picture probably would have been its last.

I don't believe that. You would have screamed like a little girl, lost control (if you know what I'm saying), & ran away!! :LMAO: :stir:

And not to proud to admit it. Would have added a whole other element to cleaning up the kitchen.

It looks like it must be OK as it's gone. I checked all around where it had been sitting & couldn't find it so, hopefully it dried off & flew off.

Bats play a big role in nature. They are taking a beating from disease (white nose syndrome) that is fatal to vast colonies in caves throughout the US. In parts of Texas they devour tomato worm moths by the ton at night and are important pollinators of desert plants. Neat photos, George. Gil

First thought was, "Rabies!" I'd rather have that bat than the tiny little mouse I can't catch. Blame thing chewed through a vacuum line in the washing machine. The flooded kitchen was the first clue. Been trying to catch it for weeks. Usually I put out Victors and one of those bucket traps in March. They move in as the weather warms and I catch all that are around. No more are seen for the year.

This must be a dwarf or something by the looks of it. It won't trip the hair-trigger-iest trap I can set. A couple of years ago I tried poison under the house instead of traps. Bad idea! I bought glue traps while I was out getting parts for the washer. Next year I will scatter poison in lengths of conduit around the yard. That works pretty well around the garden if I do it early.

Thanks for letting me get that off my chest. Good luck with the man cave.

Howl, I made the mistake of rat poison around the house. Ever hear the expression smells like a dead rat? Well, we endured a dead rat inside near century old plaster and batten walls in the master bedroom. Fortunately it was doing the holidays and we had a vacation house on the coast for about a week. It took two weeks for the odor to dissipate. We sealed the door, opened the windows and let December breezes and chill do the rest. Gil

They're very allergic to tennis rackets if they happen to get indoors and the misses is screaming.
