The beauty of Tungsten shot......

Many seem to think that everyone jumps on the TSS wagon to be able to snipe turkeys at long range, but that's just simply not true. Let me show you a small example of the positive attributes of the shot.....

My good buddy Nick has a young boy by the name of Carson. Carson is a small guy that came into this world with a physical condition that limited his mobility, but it darn sure didn't effect his mind nor get in the way of his passion for hunting. He's flat eat up with chasing all sorts of game(especially turkey) and his loving father goes the extra mile to provide him with every opportunity he possibly can. One challenge when it comes to turkey hunting was finding an acceptable firearm to get the job done as efficiently as possible. The tool chosen for that task was the gas operated 11-87 20ga for it's weight and recoil reduction. I loaded some 1oz 19g/cc #9.5s at a MV of 1080fps for Carson this season as the other lower recoil loads Nick's tested the past couple years were very limited on range and the TK19 allowed him to have a bonafied 40yd capable gun. The outcome:

Carson went on to kill more birds this year as well. Nick even let him shoot some of the EM 1-1/4oz #7s at 1090fps as they shared the same zero and Carson tolerated the recoil of the larger loads just fine. Since he handled the EM loads well, we are going to step him up to a 1-3/8oz TK19 load for the coming season and I feel like those will work out quite well.

High density shot is not just about long range, but some seem to lose focus.....

Have a good one,

Loder

This is a great post. TSS has opened up hunting opportunities for my kids that would have been impossible in the past. I was genetically on the short end of the stick for height and weight. I passed those genes onto my kids and to have a 12 year old, who weighs 60lbs soaking wet, uses sub 5lbs 28ga gun and is able to shoot turkeys and Canada geese. My favorite application for TSS is low recoil youth loads and it seems I end up making more of them each year. I have a 50lber that wants a turkey tag this year.

WTG Ronny! I know the loading is only a small part of that hunt, but it makes it possible!

I don't load TXS for the extreme ranges.. I want the best pattern and load I can get no matter if its less than 20 yards or at 50

It's the reason I started. I started with the BuckShot. 45pellets 4mm at higher velocity was so much better than lead OO BuckShot at lower velocity. Wider and more dense and even patterns and reduced recoil is better for younger and older hunters.

Great post, and yes it is good for more than 40 yards but the other benefits are why I load it.
1) quickest kills I have ever seen
2) lighter loads and reduced recoil
3) I know exactly how it was loaded and can make it repeatable (unlike some commercial brand shells that are always changing components)

This is great stuff, for sure. You're right, people forget that every latest improvement isn't about getting further and further from the game we hunt, its about improving efficiency and maybe opening doors to new opportunities. We all hunt different ways and for different reasons. For me now, its all about seeing my kids enjoying the outdoors and passing on all my knowledge (don't know what we're doing after that - Monday will come pretty quick. lol). Some light lods of TSS would get my young lad in the game with an effective tool, just that much sooner (he's OK with 20ga skeet loads, but the 3" are too much just yet).

Hats off to all who put themselves in second place and introduce a youngster to the wonders of the turkey woods.

This is the very reason I went to tss.

It's good to see young'uns successful. Tungsten has made a difference. A buddy had the run of a fabulous river bottom for years. The owner asked him to take his 12 year-old grandson turkey hunting and the boy killed a nice one that Jerry called in. Next year granddad told Jerry that since his grandson liked turkey hunting so much, he decided to limit the property to family. Let no kind deed go unpunished. ;) Gil

Awesome story, it is great to see these young ones getting out there and being successful!!
Since all the kids in my family have bout grown all up, right now for me the beauty of TSS lies in being able to carry these small lightweight guns and be just as lethal as I could with the 3.5 inch BPS. Its just a pleasure to be able to carry something so light that it almost feels like a toy that you can have absolute confidence in when the moment of truth comes.

Outstanding story, Ronny!
Way to give back, and help a youngster out!
After all, isn't that what it's all about? Seeing future generations of turkey hunters have success puts a huge grin on my face!
