Weds 05/10 – 17th Day of Ohio’s 2017 Turkey Season
I was set-up & ready to go in the big woods at 05:34, temp of 44, full moon, partly cloudy, & calm. At 05:52, I did my usual tree yelps & flydown cackle & got an immediate reply to the NW. It sounded like he was near the spot where I park when squirrel hunting. He hammered back at everything I threw at him. He was hot but not as hot as my 1st bird in the other woods. At 06:10, I could tell he had flown down & headed south through the woods which meant he should be coming in from my right & in front of me. He continued to gobble hard.
At 06:12, he appeared out in the field strutting. He strutted back & forth for several minutes just to the right of & then behind the trees leaning to the left before heading into the woods. It was then that I saw his fan & knew he was a jake. He strutted right up to the jake & stood next to the deke in full display. If the season had been progressing differently & I had been seeing/hearing birds, he would have gotten a pass. But, after spending 30+ hours in the woods the 1st week & 23 hrs this week & only seeing 3 toms & 1 hen, I had to think about it. That & the fact that he gobbled like a man & strutted like a man, he needed to be treated like a man. He was then met with a load of Federal Heavy Weigh MagShok 3” #7 magic pixie dust from my Remington 11-87 at 06:27. 14 pounds 7 ounces, 3/8” spurs, & a 4 ½” beard.
I had a trail cam set up & thought I would get a 30 second video of the bird & maybe the kill shot. Either the card was full or it was just a little high & wasn’t tripped by the bird. NO VIDEO DANG IT!!!!
It has been another tough year for me here in Ohio & in NY. Here, I saw 1 hen, 2 gobblers, & a jake killing a gob & a jake. In NY, I did see several hens but only 1 gobbler, which I killed. This season was almost a carbon copy of last year. I have spoken with a lot of folks who are seeing the same thing but nobody has a clue as to why. The last 2 winters here have been pretty mild & there should have been a lot of jakes & 2 year olds but that wasn’t the case. Now, with all the rain & unseasonable cold, I don’t hold out much hope for things to change next spring.

Thx Doug. Ima tellin' ya whut, that sucker was gobbling just like a mature bird. He strutted like 1 as well. Until he got close, I'dda bet the house he was a big ole good un or a good ole big un. He seemed danged near as hot as my 1st Ohio bird.Gobbler wrote:Congrats on fun hunt George. I punched your GN Jake exempt card so your covered.

Thx, it was fun & games until somebody had to die.OLE RASPY wrote:I just about pulled trigger on one this season myself. He was a double beard Jake. I got trail cam pics of him and finally seen him at 15 yards but I didn't. Sounds like a great mornin. Congrats George.
That's the 1st jake I've killed since the double bearded jake that jumped on my deke & broke the stake. If I had been seeing/hearing birds, pass instead of passed. (Didja see what I did there? Pass as in not killed & passed as he took a dirt nap. )

The 1st pic is where he did die. I pulled a leg out to attach the tag but otherwise, didn't move him. Same thing with deer. We start with self made tags & then use the tags provided by the state which are printed on regular white paper.OLE RASPY wrote:Gotcha. Wasn't thinkin bout that as we don't have to do that here.
