Afternoon Double in MS

Post by tubecaller10 »

My brother and I found these birds in a field yesterday pecking around with 4 jakes yesterday afternoon about 2:30. When we glassed them, they were 200 yards across field in northwest corner of a rectangle field. We were glassing them on the east side of the field. Halfway between us and them was a point that jutted out just a little bit in the field so we slipped around to the north and cut back to the west to get to the point. My brother crawled up to the edge of the point and I crawled out in the field with the decoy to where they could see it. the birds were probably 100 yards at this point. I cut and yelped one series, the 2 gobblers broke in a dead run. They got to about 20 yards I shot first one, second bird jumped up and came right back down and spun circles, Cason shot the second one and hunt was over. Whole hunt maybe took 5 minutes. It was a hunt I will never forget!

Those are some nice birds from Mississippi!! After reading both of Gene Nunnery's books-- THE OLD PRO TURKEY HUNTER and I WILL LIFT UP MINE EYES ONTO THE HILLS--I need one day to make the trip from New York to hunt in Mississippi!

Great job guys. Beautiful birds! You scared the gobblers in the area so much you were able to train that one to stand and pose with the two you already shot in fear for his life. What kind of decoy is that?

My hunting buddy who is a taxidermist made it for me. I just caped a bird out, skinned it down to his neck and he mounted it like that for a decoy with 1/2" pvc pipe for legs. It is kind of becoming legendary in MS and Al.... Leroy the Decoy!

Thank you. My turkey hunting mentor made it for me when I graduated high school. It is a 1" wide piece of leather roughly 44" long, with 2 cuts on each end. You wrap the strap in itself twice to make 2 slip knots. I absolutely love it and it is sentimental to me.
