Me and Pop's small bore double....

Post by Newbie »

A goal of mine every Spring is to hunt with Daddy and try to call him a bird. This past Saturday was one of the rare special mornings. Anyhow I told daddy to take his 20ga and I was toting my Granddaddy's ole .410. Now this .410 is the gun some 23 years ago I killed my very first turkey with. So with the stars aligned just right, TSS in both guns, we set up under a Dogwood tree. As daylight started to break the birds went to gobbling and gobbling and gobbling. I was sure there was 2 roosted together and told daddy he could shoot first if they both came in and id try to kill the other. I haven't heard gobbling like this in a good while. When the birds flew down I started calling and they seemed to like it. Wasn't long we had some hens fire up and I went to calling at the hens and the 2 longbeards were hammering away. Long story short hens came in the field with the longbeards in tow. Once they saw (Earl) they mean mug walked right to em and started strutting. I was ready hammer back .410 up and Daddy still hadn't pick his dang gun up. I said Daddy kill em. That's when I heard daddy start the count down... 1,2,3 BOOM we got our first double!!! Talk about good times holy smokes. We went and got the birds and was thinking back on ole times. I remembered Granddaddy and Mammie telling me about the Story of Easter which is fast approaching and about the Dogwood tree when blooming resembles the Cross where Jesus died for you and I. Good Stuff awesome Hunt. Got to Love the Home place.

That's one hunt that will be hard to beat!
Congrats
Get there early, stay late, sit still and don't use weather as an excuse to stay home.
