S Fla Osceolas down
S Fla Osceolas down
My wife and I doubled up on some osceolas Saturday morning for the opener. I listened and watched them Friday morning and went back mid evening and set up a natural blind.
We got in well before daylight, and it was a good thing we did. Sitting in the dark I heard something fall out of a tree behind me..it sounded like one crapping. I peeked over my shoulder and couldn't see anything. A propane cannon was shooting in a distant filed and I was worried this may mess the gobblers up a little, but it didnt. At daybreak a turkey gobbled at the cannon...right over us. He was literally one tree behind me. It sounded like a jake to me. As we're sitting listening to everything wake up, we hear wing beats about 30 yards in front of us. I see a gobbler land and told my wife to kill him. She had a work slowly to get her gun around, but was able to get on him fast. At the shot, thetc turkey over my head gobbled. We sat and let things play out on their own.
A few minutes later the turkey over me flew out, but I was never able to get my gun up due to him being on top of us. I had to let him ease out of sight and then get ready. As this is going on, another gobbler got fired up in thevery corner of the field and I purred and clicked to him softly and he cut me off. It was a waiting game then
We could still hear hens in the trees and knew when they came down that the gobblers would ease on up our way. Sure enough they did.
After getting all the hens on the ground, the gobblers slowly came our way. One of them was coming on in and I was ready, but one just picked up and flew off. Not sure who was more nervous, me or the other gobbler, I went ahead and shot.
As we were gathering our stuff and going to look at our birds, two jakes came out to take a peek, but left quickly. Getting set up for pictures, again we hear wing beats very close. Another gobbler flies off of his roost...right on the field edge in plain view! We never saw him or knew he was there. Crazy hunt! But a very good one and in a very sentimental place for us. Look close in the pics and you will see marking on the live oak. It's a long story on that, just know it's a special place and that oak has seen many gobblers come and go. It was hit over a year ago but a tornado, but is still hanging in there. It used to be draping to the ground with limbs and was a very good set up.
