I think a shiney blued gun would be a disadvantage, but I don't doubt a black gun would work about as well as the best camo dipped gun. If camo gives the hunter an edge, it's a very fine edge.

I'll defer to Hawglips on this one. He is the biggest advocate around for the camo gun. :)

It could conceivably make a difference, but I think the important thing is to cut down on any glare. My little sxs has a chrome receiver and I cover that with camo tape. I've thought of having it camo dipped, but I don't think it would really matter.

There have been times when the first thing I've spotted on another hunter has been the glare off his gun. When turkey hunting, I try to set up in the shade to avoid sunlight glare.

Hard hunted turkeys in any area of the country will spook over anything out of place. If your turkeys aren't hunted daily, you don't have to be so paranoid to camo your gun.

Camo for me is just a personal preference. I like it. I don't need it. I watched a gobbler walk 4 feet from my buddy laying in the grass wearing blue jeans and a blue and white flannel shirt.

I've been experimenting for the last few years, and now only seldom do I wear a facemask. Never did like them anyway, but facepaint is such a pain when you hunt as much as I do! I would think the sight of my ugly mug would scare the holy bejesus out of 'em, but turkeys really don't seem to care as long as I'm not moving. That said, a camo gun isn't absolutely necessary, but it could conceivably keep from spooking these paranoid rascals. Besides, they look "cool."

I don't own a camo gun and have no desire to, I have called in a ton of coyotes in the fall and in the snow and I have no problem getting turkeys to come in close enough to kill with a shovel, last but not least I think they are ugly as I am in my avatar picture. :o

I thought all of the above was correct until I saw a demonstration of a SC DNR game warden use a dog (Badazz Belgian Malinois) to find a hidden gun and shotgun shells that had been fired. Plan B with the dog was to bite the snot out of the trespasser/poacher. Only practical reason I have painted cheap guns in the past is that the finish is less likely to rust than bluing. If you keep your butt still like everyone has done for generations instead of worrying about high-fiving for a video to some orchestra hidden in the woods, don't worry about gun camo. :)

First you tell them that you shoot #9shot. Then you tell them your 20/28/410ga will outshoot their 3 1/2 lead slinger. Now no cool camo guns? Next you'll be saying turkeys don't respond to silent dog whistles, and that turkeys can be killed past 40 yds. What's the world coming to?

No camo guns here, blue and wood. I've never seen it as a handicap.

I've got a new wood/blued Franchi 28 gauge that I plan to shoot some with this year. Stay out for f the sun and DON'T move. The turkey should only see a the bore of my gun barrel if anything.
