Post by HunterGKS »

COLUMBUS, OH - Ohio hunters checked 17,793 wild turkeys during the combined 2016 spring wild turkey hunting season and youth wild turkey hunting season, April 16-May 15, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).

Hunters checked 16,229 birds during the four weeks of the 2016 wild turkey season compared to 16,049 birds in 2015. Young hunters checked 1,564 birds during the 2016 youth season compared to 1,589 in 2015.

I also added 2. Congrats on a successful season.

It was pretty tough here in Crawford county & I count myself as very lucky. I called in 3 hens opening morning & they brought along a 23 1/2 pounder for #1. I hunted the next 11 days, heard 2 gobblers & saw 1 with no hens seen. I didn't hunt in Ohio the next 9 days as I went to NY & killed 2. The 1st day back, I managed to call a gobbler in from 600+ yards for number 2.

What kind of action did you have?

Well from the opener until the 30th i had birds absolutely hammering. Just flat gobbling their heads off and putting on shows. I kept hearing from people that the birds were not gobbling and they couldnt kill any and all that stuff. 4 of those birds died. Oh i should mention I was in kansas and missouri haha. Jokes aside i was not here and didnt start hunting here u til 5-2, the first day of all day hunting. I woke up about 9am and ate breakfast. Lounged around until noon and then headed and hour from home to my favorite spot which happens to be public. I walked in and had a bird dead in a couple hours. 1-1/8 and 10-1/4 forget the weight.

Went and bought another tag. Did house stuff ( was getting stuff done to close on a house on the 6th) finally got around to goin back out on the 11th. Same scenario. Headed out about noon. Hour drive. Get there and drive around a bit. Finally found 2 longbeards and 3 hens. Texted a buddy told him i was goin after 2 i had located. (He told a coworker of his and made a wager one would be dead in an hour). Headed in and made laid down my best moves. Less than an hour i had bird number 2 dead. 1-1/4 10-1/4 forget the weight.

Heard a total of 12-15 gobbles but killed 2 good public land birds. Not the super season but another season with 2 tags filled.

I have a buddy that didnt kill one this year. He had opportunities but couldnt capitalize on them. He is one those guys that needs many encounters to finally kill a bird haha.
