kansas and nebraska public

Post by jtmartin »

I am heading to Kansas and Nebraska next week for the first time and hunting all public. Any thoughts, comments or suggestions are welcome. Heading to north west Ks and ne.

Thanks in advance.

I dont know what the forecast shows, but be prepared to deal with wind. MT was uncharacteristically calm yesterday, but it made up for it today and almost blew me from central MT to ND this morning.

In KS be prepared to put some miles on to locate birds on WIHA's. My limited experience in KS indicates plenty of birds but not all WIHAs are equivalent. Keep driving and glassing until you find birds.

NW Nebraska's public land is more concentrated than KS, so covering ground will be more on foot. Keep looking if you aren't on a bird. Cover ground and call to find a hot bird has been my method in NW Nebraska.

Binos can pay huge dividends.

If you've not been told, wet muddy roads are terribly hazzardous. They will end your day in a hurry.

I was out there last week and the birds were still flocked up pretty good but responding to the call well. Timing should be good for your trip. The birds out there respond to the call very well and will come from a long way off. If you don't have good cover to move on birds, don't be scared to call at them from long distances, they will cover alot of ground in a short period of time. Be prepared to experience any weather conditions imaginable at any given time. If you are going with thone guys from SC, yall will smash them. Good luck!
