which shell to reach out there

Post by -DIRTNAP- »

ive been shooting the longbeard xr shells really impressed with the patterns but they are lead, I use to use hevi 7 shot and the mag blends loved that dense pattern I use a browning maxus 3 1/2" but I have more turkeys hang up so I need the advantage my and my buddies debate this every year to the end but what is better at killing farther

I don't know I usually hang the birds up on tree limbs or fences. Never had one hang up before I shot em.

I do know it would kill me to think I could not kill birds 50 years ago when 35 yds was a long shot. I shoot modern loads and and stuff hevier than lead but that's only cause I like my birds supper dead. I often carry a 60 year old gun with lead loads and have never had one stay out of range..

maybe work on reading the woods and gobbler tricks?
Dont start a fire in the woods you cant stomp out...it may come back and burn your a$$

I'll never shoot a 10 as I don't like getting knocked down. Besides that, I like my retinas exactly where they are.

Another option is Hevi Mag Blend it is blended so that in the even a gobbler does not hang up you have 7s to 45 yards, if he hangs at 55 the 6s do the work or if he really hangs up at 75+ you have the 5s.

If you keep the Maxxus that would be a great long range load. If you opt to get rid of the Maxxuss they make it in a ten gauge and with the Extra Knockdown power the 5s would hold to 90 or so.

:LMAO: :LMAO: :LMAO: I knew there was a reason I liked you. Thanks for refreshing.

I have found a 22mag, 22 Hornet, or extreme cases the ole 22-250 reaches out just fine. Just make sure you load it wiith full metal jacket bullets, so you don't blow em to bits.

Is this a serious thread?
I dont think its very ethical to take 60+
Yard shots. More birds will be wounded than cleanly harvested.
Ever seen a Gobbler fly off with a broken leg?
I have and he is a dead bird.
A single pellet in the crop or in the gut or lungs---He is a dead bird
And you will not get to hunt him again.
Are we turkey hunting? Or just
Stuck on KILLING?
My daughter who is only 11 yrs old has killed 2
This spring at 20-24 yards with a .410!!
I load TSS and i know for sure it will kill a gobbler
WaaayyybWaaayyy WWWAAAYYY!!!
Farther than is Ethical.
I think we need to really step back and consider
Why we are hunting???
To KILL and Beat our chest and Show off?
Or
Are we trying to really call a turkey in close
And get the entire experience???
Im done preaching.
If he is too far, you just get to play the game
Another day!!!!
God Bless
Shane

How does the #7 pellets know they are only good for 30 yards?
I think this is false advertising.. 7's are good for 50 yards for sure as I have killed turkeys with the heavy 7 duckloads
at almost 50. So if you add 20 extra yards to the 7's, then the 6's are good at 75 and the 5's are good at 95+

why would they limit the pellets capacity to a mere 30, 55 & 75 when we all know longbeardxr's kill at 75

at least thats all I read about now on fake book is how a certain choke with the er's smoked another at 75 yada yada yada

Now its very funny. I see.
I was just told a story today that was a burr
In my pants. Dang kid loading 3oz of TSS
and trying to kill as far as possible. Shot two at
17HMR Range. I guess im still little ticked at
His lack of respect for hunting.
I digress

Well, nothing out of a shotgun is going to beat TSS, but long range sniping is really not where it's at.

Would ya just look at the graphic IcedTurkes put up there. That's all you need to know and like 9 yards farther than the Drury's can shoot.

A large load of TSS 7 or 8s will carry the energy needed at distances farther than a shot gun can reliably be consistent. A 60 yard gun is easily attainable but being able to make that shot consistently is the real question.
