got my first bird

Post by gobbler83 »

Like the tittle says. Man ive been so close the last 4 days and something would always happen. I went yesterday evening and roosted him. Well went back this morning we trying getting on him he wouldnt gobble. Kept on moving around a little and he gobbled on problem was he was right on top of us. My cousin was standing on a log. I was hunkered down and bryers digging in my knees. Set there for 15 minutes and he moved off. So we crawled about 40 yards through all kinds of crap got set up on a road. I had my montana pur fect pair set up and my cousin called he answered behind us. I got sturned around he called he answered took him about 5 minutes to show up but felt like a eternity. My heart was about to come out of chest by this time i couldnt catch my breath couldnt hold the gun still. Then he seen the decoys he was MAD when he seen the jake. He litterly would jarred the ground with a gobble and started towards us. He was about 20 yards i pulled the trigger he hit the ground. My cousin hollered at Hey you gonna go get your bird. I was in shock. I love love turkey hunting. They have got to be the prestiest animal ive ever seen. If you dont like turkey hunting something is wrong. Sorry for the long story just thought id share.

Lucky, blessed or whatever it is, take it! When I look back on hunts, I have made stupid mistakes and still killed gobblers that I shouldn't have and I have done everything I thought was right and had them stolen by a hen or just not come in. To be honest, I think I remember the ones that got away more vivid than the ones I've killed. Weird?

The bird im on right is about to drive me insane. Hes been shot at twice by 2 other guys in my hunting club. You cant get him to locate for nothing in the mornings. Only way i got him to answer this morning is yelping really soft. Hes been pressured really hard. He gobbled six times today and then just dissapeared. I know the area hes roosting. One morning he will be on one side of the holler the next day he will be on the other side. Ive tried just about everything. Hes like a ghost one minutes hes there next minute gone. Ive tried not to call to aggresivly. But that thing has got me to scrathing my head. I got on him last sunday he was about 35 yards but had to much brush in the way to take a shot. Then tuesday evening i bumped him and its been down hill from there.
