Mini Me & Me!
Got to hunt with my mini me again this morning. She has killed two and we were hoping to get her on another one. They gobbled pretty good this morning, but we're not responding to the calls at all. We repositioned several times but just wasn't making any headway. I texted my hunting partner to see where he was and how he was doing. Nothing much was happening on the property he was on, and it's fairly close to where we were so I asked him to stop by when he was done. He texted me about 1 o'clock and said he was heading our way if we were still there. We were on a fields edge watching two strutters in the shade. I told him where we were and he headed our way.
My buddy arrived and eased to the edge about 100 yards from us. We were in between him and the birds. He tried several calls to no avail. Then I heard a series of sweet clear sounding yelps. Almost immediately one of the birds broke strut and walked the edge right to us where Mini Me gave him a lethal dose of lead. The other bird gobbled at the shot. I could tell what the bird was considering so I started aggressive purring on a pot and my buddy did the same. Next thing you know the other bird is on a dead run to take care of some business. I asked my daughter if she wanted to shoot him too since its legal in this state. She said no, I want you to. It didn't take any arm twisting for me to oblige. I've seen her kill quite a few, but this was our first double.
After it was all said and done I asked what kind of call my buddy used to make those yelps. He told me it was a cane pole call that he got from a friend of his. I remember the last name was Sharp. I've never been a believer in those Trumpet/Wingbone style calls. But what I saw today convinced me maybe I need to take the time to learn how to properly use one.
