For the 1st Time Since joining GobblerNation

Post by gophert »

I am NOT changing loads/chokes and shooting paper before the season!

...and I'm not sure I like it. I think I'm getting more like Shooter every day. Who else is shooting the same combo from last year?

Same combo in 12, gonna shoot the 20 one time to see if I want to put a fastfire on the gun or not. I am satisfied with the way 12 shoots to not need a red dot, hope I am same way with 20. That should save a lot of cardboard carnage.

I have plenty of older factory Winchester 3 inch turkey loads in 12 ga. with 2 ounces of 5 shot, they seem to be just fine, also have 10 boxes of the same in 20 ga. 3 inch with 1 5/8 ounces of 5 shot that do as well as the 12 ga. just using factory (came with the gun) full choke tubes. I do prefer using the Remington youth model pump shotgun due to the lighter weight of the gun and so much shorter makes it easier to use in the blind. I have no problem swatting a turkey dead at the great distances. Never had I shot paper to see how they performed, nor have I ever messed around with different and expensive choke tubes. Old school here I guess.

We shot 3" and 3 1/2 " #6 Winchester Longbeards for the first time last year and I don't think we'll shoot them this year. While our own fault, I dang near missed a bird at 20 yards and my son missed one clean. I prefer a little more forgiveness. I'm planning to go back to the same #6 Winchester Supremes that have performed well for me since they were introduced.

I did purchase a used 1187 in 12 ga that I used for upland and waterfowl. I'm planning to set it up for turkeys also. I'll need to buy a choke and will start with the Supremes to see how they perform.

I've used the same combo in my 11-87 SPST for 7-8 years with great success & don't see the need to change. Indian Creek .650 & Fed Mag Shok Heavyweight 3" #7

I was all good until Hal had to go and come up with a new 1-1/2oz load for the 28. I gotta try it out.

I will be shooting the same loads as last year. I may have to go punch my finger through a target, you know, just for old time's sake.

Cheers

I have found a good combo that seems to work well. I will check the sight and just make sure it shoots straight.

Sorry Tim, but I might have to break tradition this year. I'm thinking about breaking out the Big 10 Auto for chits and grins.
Back when I gave it to Dad, he took the bead out, and put glow sights on it. They never lined up right, so I'm taking them off and putting the bead back in. Probably need to shoot it again. Can't hardly wait!!!

Still have plenty of Hevi-13 3-1/2" 2-1/4 oz #6's left in my stash so I'll be running them again this year. I'll likely burn one to verify zero on my FF2.
