I'm almost too embarassed to share this...
...but maybe I can save someone some pain and suffering. I have been shooting and handling firearms since I was 10 years old. Safety has always been of the utmost importance. After my close call a few weeks ago with some ammo of unknown origin I should have learned to pay attention. Anyway I headed to the range to make sure my ML'er was sighted in before heading to the woods.I think it was my 3rd or 4th shot that rattled my world big time.I pulled the trigger and things kinda exploded with the rifle flying into the air and crashing down on the bench. Primers, tools, pellets and bullets were scattered all over the place. I felt blood running down my nose.I was stunned to say the least. I had no idea what happened . I got the blood to stop and straightened out my glasses and started putting two and two together. No way did I put in a double charge,I know I only put in one bullet.I started inspecting the rifle for damage and even removed the breech plug. My shoulder hurt like hell but I decided to reload and see what would happen. That'I s when I noticed my ramrod was missing. DUHHHHHHHHHHHH. I could not believe I did something so stupid. I found the ramrod 80 yards down range bent into a "C" shape. This rod was a 1/4 in piece of steel that Don from Camo Solutions made for me awhile back.I took the rifle to a gun smith today to have it safety inspected and picked up another ramrod. Be careful guys, somebody loves you.
Put you plans in the nail scarred hands.

Wow is right. That could have turned out much worse. I'm glad it didn't turn out worse. Good call sharing the incident. I know we all sometimes think no way we could do something like that But then something like this brings us back to reality.

Wow! Glad you weren't seriously hurt.
I can see how just one distraction during the ML process could cause that.
Stay safe!

Glad to hear that it you are O.K., Red. It could have been so much worse. You are a humble man and this story proves that!
Mistakes happen. Accidents happen. It could have been so much worse.
Do you think that you can talk Don out of another ramrod? Sounds like you could use one..
Have him put some fletching on the business end, you might get 100 yards out of the next one!

That's scary. Glad you weren't too badly hurt Red. Thanks for sharing this as it gives us all pause for thought....
Re: I'm almost too embarassed to share this...
I think that the fact the ramrod was so heavy really added to the recoil.Fletchings would be cool. Might as well add a broadhead too.Hognutz wrote:Glad to hear that it you are O.K., Red. It could have been so much worse. You are a humble man and this story proves that!

Scary stuff, Billie! Glad you are ok. I once put a 30-06 handload in a 300 win mag. case split and I had a little shrapnel in the cheek but nothing more than superficial. Scared the crap out of me.

I did it with a solid aluminum ramrod ahead of a 495gr bullet. That's a few thousand grain load. Knocked me cold. Face full of snow brought me to. Snow looked like a murder scene. Never had a headache that bad. I was a few miles back in the mtn and was lucky nothing real serious happened to me or the gun

So happy for OK. I know folks whom have done it.
I hunt deer pretty much exclusively wit a muzzleloader, I also site in six or seven other folks as well. Sometimes I feel my self rushing and realize I need to slow down. Essentially you are handloading on the bench. A lot of things can happen if you have one brain fart.

Guilty as charged.
Never been whooped by recoil like I was then. . . . never found the ramrod but it did make it threw the target downrange (50yards I believe). . . sideways according to the tear. I've never told anyone.

.....my first thought while reading was of the "shooting an arrow our of a shotgun" trick...Fletchings would be cool. Might as well add a broadhead too.

Not exactly what I expected. This was more like what I expected:
Several years ago, a buddy of mine was hunting in a box stand. He had all of his spare loads on the shelf in front of him. A real nice 10 point walks out and he shoots. Unfortunately, he missed but the buck never moved so he reloads and misses again. Same story..buck stands there looking around so he starts to reload another time. Just about the time the bullet was halfway down the barrel; he looks up and realizes the powder charge was still on the shelf....OOPS!
ps..Glad you are ok!
