Good mushroom hunt today

Post by RapscallionVermilion »

With all the rain we've been getting here, my wife and I figured it would be a good time to head to the northern New Mexico mountains to pick some mushrooms. This year is looking to be best crop in a long time.

My wife snagged the first porcini.

Here is a small patch of chanterelles.

We found countless big blooms like this one.

The elevation is about 10,000 feet. We hunt dusky grouse here - that's how we first found the mushrooms - and have bumped a few turkeys now and then. My lab would much rather hunt grouse than look for mushrooms, but any day in the mountains is better than hanging around the house. Grouse season opens in about 3 weeks.

Today's haul. About 9 lbs of chanterelles, a handfull of porcini, and a couple of good sized lobsters.

Nice haul of chants. Our season has been spotty with the sporadic showers. I see a variety of boletes in the neighborhood, but not as good a variety as your porcini. Don't see lobsters....

Dang, you did find a bunch....I thought you were out of breath yesterday when we talked because of the elevation....I'm thinking it was from all the mushrooms you were packing....

Hey Kenny, we were taking a shortcut through a deadfall when you called. Perfect timing  The connection kept going in and out, amazing that I had signal at all.

Icedturkes, or anyone interested in learning more about mushrooms, I'm a big fan of David Arora's two books. The little pocket book, "All that the Rain Promises and More ..." is a great place to start. Followed by his big tome "Mushrooms Demystified". The one caveat is that they focus on the species found predominantly in the west, but most of the western varieties are found in the east as well, and in particular all the good edibles.

Hey KP, there is some good mushroom hunting down your way. Check it out.

Now, if you going to sneak up on that gator, you might want some of those magic mushrooms first.

That would have been a cool weekend....I've seen oysters, chantrells and a few others I reconize after looking at some pics. There's really not a whole lot out there pertaining to just Louisiana like I hoped. If we get some rain down this way I may go look for some. I feel confident on reconizing oyster and chantrells.

The Missouri Dept, of Conservation website has some good pics of edible mushrooms. I didn't relize there were so many edibles out there.

Here in South Georgia I usually find them in the presence of oaks, mostly within the drip line of "live oaks" (Quercus virginiana) within a day or so of a downpour. Gil
