More Rain

Post by HunterGKS »

Late yesterday afternoon, Sunday, 07/12/15, we got hit with some pretty heavy rain, 2+ inches in less than an hour. At 1 point in time, the water was over the bridge which hasn’t happened in the 10 years I have lived here. I got out & took some pics after the rain had quit & the water had started to recede. My road was clear when I left at 9 this morning but there is still a lot of water in the fields & well over the banks of my creek. More heavy rain & possible t-storms are predicted for this afternoon & evening. Like we really need more rain.

I have only seen 2 other squirrels on my place, a red & a fox several years ago. This 1 was in a white maple that is at the end of my deck ramp. I think it may have been in the corn across the road & was looking for refuge from the rain. I have no nut trees or anything else that would attract bushies & the woods are a good ways north of me across open fields.

It was literally dead calm compared to what we had last week. We have more windy days here than any place else I've lived.

Wow! That is some kind of dry!
We got 15" in May and then had a tropical storm in June. We've gotten our years worth of rain already here in E. TX. We were in that too much water situation and it's no fun. I made it through with no flooding but many weren't so lucky. My county got the federal disaster declaration.
Good luck to the OP, hope the rain stops...or heads to Grumpy!

We could use it for sure, hay is $200 a ton already and will be going higher. Spring wheat looks sad and the winter wheat will not weigh even close to the 60 lb. per bushel average. It is dry as I can ever remember it.

Hay here will sell at a premium because it has been a constant struggle with rain to get it put up.

Turkey question re: rain. I have always heard that heavy rains or wet late springs are bad for the poult's. We have been hammered with a lot of rain here in WV too. Do you all think this will cause the poult's survival to be in jeopardy, or have they matured enough to since May to overcome whatever it is that rainy seasons bring that is supposed to be bad for them?

I don't buy the wet spring = low poult survival. Now cold and wet during a very short window of when they are born can be rough. Mother hen will take care of them

A friend of mine has a large dairy farm. I was there a couple of weeks ago to pick up 2 barrels & they were unloading a flatbed load of hay. The bales were the huge 1 ton sized. They came in from some place out west & were in the $200 neighborhood.

The farmers got all the winter wheat off late last week & most of it baled. Don't know the weight. The straw left on the ground is ruined. The corn looks real good & the beans on higher ground are doing OK but a lot has been flooded & won't yield much at all.

After the storms yesterday & seeing the damage south of me all the way down to KY., I am extremely Thankful that my area didn't have any major damage. Hopefully we're done with the rain at least for several days.
