1 5/8" TSS recoil?
What's the recoil on these like (the 20 gauge big stubby XL load) as compared to something like a 1 1/4 oz. 3" turkey load? I haven't built my trap yet so I haven't shot any and we were wondering how punishing they'd be for the younger kids.
Re: 1 5/8" TSS recoil?
Depending on gun weight, recoil can be stout for a youngster. It wouldn't be pleasant for an adult to shoot repeatedly. I would not let a youngster practice with the load. Instead, buy low recoil 20 gauge shells which are available at most gun clubs. In a hunting situation, do the switcheroo. With a bird out front, the recoil won't be noticed. There are also tss loads in 1 oz. and 1 5/16 oz. that would be fine for normal ranges. Here's a mail order selection of low recoil 20 gauge shells:

My son has no problem with 3" magnum traditional turkey loads... is it a lot worse than those?
Re: 1 5/8" TSS recoil?
In my 870 with the sureshot stock and the good Remington pad not bad at all, in the 220b its a pretty good punch even with a limbsaver slip on. I also had the forcing cone lengthened on the 870 for this very reason. William at Sumtoy said it likely wouldn't help the pattern, it would reduce recoil a bit.

It is definitely more stout the the 1 1/4oz loads.

A Shooter's Friend slip on recoil pad will do wonders for taming recoil from that load. The pad is super soft gel with a really wide footprint to spread out the recoil. It only adds 1/4" to the LOP, though even that may be too much for a youngster. Be very helpful for sight-in sessions. I use one there but don't hunt with it. It adds several ounces and I find that it can hang on clothing if you have to mount the gun quickly (which you usually don't while turkey hunting).
But I agree that the switcheroo is the way to go for a youngster. They will never notice the difference with a turkey off the end of the barrel.

If you have reservations Hal has a 1 5/16 load. I took a load I was given that I think is too hot, 1 1/4oz load. backed off and got velocity and pattern I wanted for kids. Pattern was 180 in 10 and 190 in 20. Plenty good pattern to 45 or 50 and less recoil than the 20xls.

This sounds more like what I'm going for. My son and I are NOT going to be shooting out to 60 yards or so, we want a killer pattern out to 40+ or so for more traditional hunting ranges. More or less, I want a load that will run with a great 12 gauge traditional lead load for him out of his 20 gauge.

Yep, my first TSS kill was with a 1.25 oz T9 12 ga load. Killed the bird stone dead at 45 yds. Spent a ton of money shooting and developing loads for that gun since then, but that load will do 200/10 @ 40 and 111/10 @ 50. Not really sure why I bothered. And very low recoil.Johndoe wrote:If you have reservations Hal has a 1 5/16 load. It is stout but not as bad as some factory loads. To me it is on par with the MagBlend reduced recoil loads.
Hal has a 1 1/8oz load that I use with the kids. Probably should just be using it for me as well since it out produces most factory 12ga loads.

Are you referring to the Big 20 Stubby XL?GMaxson wrote:It is stout but not as bad as some factory loads. To me it is on par with the MagBlend reduced recoil loads.

I just don't want to subject him to something on par with a factory 12 gauge magnum load.
Re: 1 5/8" TSS recoil?
This calculator is handy to compare loads and gun weights. Gun weight contributes, but the weight of the payload and velocity are the primary factors affecting recoil:

Re: 1 5/8" TSS recoil?
The recoil in my encore with this load is comparable to a hvy shot 3" 2oz in my 1187. It's not to bad for an adult jmo.
