Federal TSS Test

Post by HartClemson99 » January 22nd, 2018, 12:08 pm

I got to test a few new rounds of Federal’s new Heavyweight TSS #9 loads in 3”, 1 3/4oz 12ga and 13/16 oz .410. I fired these rounds out of a couple of my tried and true turkey guns (12ga 870 26” barrel with and Indian Creek .665 and my 870 .410 25” barrel with a fixed factory full) at a laser ranged 40 yards.

The pictures are of my best patterns, but the consistency of each shot pattern was superb and the velocity (which was consistent) is as advertised based on my chronograph (around 1100 fps for .410 and 1200fps for 12ga). I cut open one of each of the shells and did a pellet count based on weights: 362 pellets in an ounce, which is dead on with a TSS #9 (2.03mm/18.1g/cc). Both shell’s payload weighed in exactly as advertised. Both shells contained just powder, the wad, the shot and a fine buffer (almost as fine as baking soda). Both were roll crimped with the 12ga featuring a clear overshot card and the .410 having a cardboard card. No extra components (Mylar, cork, felt) were in the shell. I have attached pictures of the wads and powder (37.5 for 12ga and 14.5 for .410). The 12ga is the Flightcontrol Flex Wad and the .410 was a triple split wad. Interesting enough, we found one of the Flightcontral Flex wads imbedded in the carpet of our TSS trap from a 40 yards shot.

As a comparison, my 870 12ga with the same choke tube put 353 in the 10” circle at 40 yards with a 3” 2oz handload; 69 more pellets in the 10” circle with 90 more pellets in the shell.

How do you feel the federal compared to your .410 handload?

With a very small samples size: pretty darn close. My best handload pattern in #9s out of that gun was 136 and my first round of Federal was 130.

Personally, I still think Hal’s #10s or 9.5s are the best option for my .410.

Pretty good numbers. What kinda numbers does it put up with 9.5 and 10?

The federal 410 wad looks like a tps410.. Is it thicker?

130 from a .410 with a factory load...wow!! Definitely a game changer...

I noticed that my choke tubes are skinned and scarred up pretty good from my reloads. Wonder if federal tss will have the same issue with there loads? And how some will react to that if they do.

Checked on the Federal web site and can't find them.
Put you plans in the nail scarred hands.

I said it once, i'll say it again. I would much rather buy it from Apex before I bought it from Federal. If they are decent shells Federal will screw them up somehow.
