20 gauge TSS load for youth

Post by Tad » January 13th, 2018, 9:58 am

Hello everyone,
I am new to loading TSS but have loaded many 12 gauge trap shells and thousands of rounds of rifle shells. I am looking for a recipe and place to buy necessary components.

My guess is that I will need.
TSS
20 ga hulls (primed if possible)
Shotshell 20gauge priming system if hulks are not primed
Wads
I have red dot powder (would like to use that if possible....if not..a recommendation on powder
Shot buffer
Overshot cards
Roll crimp tool
Recommendation on whether a vibrator is needed for mixing buffer and shot.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There's an old duck load floating around. It used to be common knowledge, but it's kind of a secret now for some reason.

Anyhow, I'm in the same process. I ordered some T10s from hawglips and will ask for a recipe after the shot comes in.

I can't comment on tools or anything else, because I will take a leap and adapt to brass cases.

Tad, when you buy your shot most sellers provide detailed reloading information. Follow it and loading tss is a breeze.

Howl, I doubt Hal has any recipes using brass hulls and you have to be very careful substituting components as it could have a adverse effect on pressures.

Correct. If someone gives you recipes, you can only rely on them to works as prescribed. Using any recipe as a starting point to use differently is completely on the responsibility on the person who tries it.

Y’all with Shooter

He has a 20ga youth sized tss load.

I have found tho that most youth can handle the regular load unless your talking about a 6 year old kid etc.

I’m in the same boat. I’ve been loading 2.5oz TSS shells a few years. Hoping to get my 5 year old behind a trigger this spring. I reached out to Hal (Hawglips) and bought some #10s and he supplied a recipe for a 1 1/8oz TSS load. No patterns yet though from me.

Interested to hear how you like that 1 1/8 ounce load. I’m loading 1 7/16 ounce of #9s. Haven’t gotten to shoot but 3 of them so far. That light load sounds awesome with 10’s.

1 1/8 out of a six pound 20ga is going to kick like a .270.

Sounds like great information. Is it proper protocol for me to private message Hal or should I do that in open forum. I would like to buy some shot and get his advice on proper wads. The 1 1/8 oz load sounds great. I have one boy who is 8 and pretty stout and an 11 year old. Both have taken deer with a 7MM-08 shooting "adult" loads. If that is consistent with a 20 gauge recoil, then I guess it really doesn't matter which 20 gauge load I use. The gun will be a tristar arms semi automatic....so that should take some of the recoil out as well. Any advice on how to get in touch with Hal???? Thanks again for all of the responses.

PM hawglips (that’s) Hal. He and shooter both sell TSS and give out load data. You can PM either of them and they will hook you up. Good luck.

I have 3 youth loads, 3/4oz, 1 1/4oz, and 1 3/8oz. The last two are very simple. The 3/4oz is a little involved.

That 1 1/4 is a mean little load but that 1 3/8 load will do the job plenty well for anybody, I'm thinking very seriously of using it exclusively this year .

20 gauge recoil is up to 25% more than 7mm08. You could just practice them on soft loads and use a lighter load turkey shell when hunting. Thing is they have to learn to hold the gun tight all the time. My boy will do well for a shot or two then he gets to thinking its no big deal. He relaxes and gets punched. We've been practicing with a 22lr insert in a .410.

So we rolled our own 20XL’s with the recipe that Hal gave me and shot the tristar full choke this morning ( i measure it to be approx .587 at muzzle). The target was 53 yds.....just to see how it did. Here is a picture of the result. Is this a good result or should I try a different choke tube? A friend of mine recommended trying an Indian creek.....if I can find one for the Tristar.

Both boys said it kicked but smiles and said they wanted to try again!

Same gun, hevishot #5’s 1 1/4 oz 3” 1090fps

I know its comparing apples to oranges....but figured it would be good for reference. Any suggestions on a different choke or just be satisfied with this?

A tighter tube would probably help and Indian Creek makes excellent tubes, their 560 or 565 may be a good place to start or you could call them and see what they recommend. I think the thread in that TriStar is Mobil or at least that's what mine is.
