Rio Blue 3" 12 ga Hulls?

Post by FloppinTom » August 9th, 2017, 1:28 pm

Looks like Federal 3" 12 ga hulls are out of stock again. Who knows for how long this time. Has anyone loaded a 2 1/4 oz load in the Rio 3" Blue Hulls? The Rio hull seems to have close capacity to the Federals. If anyone has any data I'd be interested if not I may try to put a load together to be tested. :bom:

If the Rio hulls are once fired make sure you use Rio primers when you reload them. Rio primers have a larger diameter than Fiocchi primers.

I put together a 2 1/4 oz load of TSS #8.5 today in the blue Rio 3" hulls w/ the 22mm brass. Speed is good so it's off for pressure testing.

Came back a little slow at 890fps and 7100psi which is fine for #8s or #8.5s. Ill add a few grains of powder and send it away again for testing. Id like to be at least 1000fps for #9s

FloppinTom look into the 3” Fio hulls, you can get 1175 out of a 2 1/4 oz load within safe pressures.

Are these just for Rios, or will they work on easterns, Merriam's and Osceola too?

Got the results from the second test load back at 1140fps and 9800psi, no more worrying when Federal hulls get scarce and you feel the need for overkill.
So they are now good for Easterns, Rios, Osceolas and long range Merriams! :struttin:
