powder migration and .742 bores

Post by willie » July 23rd, 2017, 4:23 pm

i have a manual that has quite a few recipes for heavy-shot.the wads that were called for didn't fit hull good enough to stop powder migration.i know and i say again i know but i didn't want to change components without checking pressures so this is what i did.i took a box cutter (folding kind) and cut 4 slot in shot cup seal 90 degrees apart.i then took a 1/2" deep well socket and pushed on wad seal until it expanded.i put in hull and i could feel a little resistence and i proceeded to load.this stopped the powder migration 100 percent.i shot some of the shells and it also seem to seal better on the bore. i was happy with the results and patterns for heavy-shot ( 207 in 10" circle at 40 yards) 1 3/4 ounce load of 5x6 heavy-shot.

yes i was really liking the 207 he-shot count.this is my counts so far on different shot

207 hevishot 5x6 in 10"
145 copper plated 5x6 in 12"
255 TSS #8 i 10"
i haven't tried 9's or duplex loads yet
i also have 3 1/2" heavy-shot loads 240 in 12" but way to much recoil for these old bones.
2 3/4" TSS #8 were 181 in 10" circle
just a hobby for me and i love it.

Great numbers for 5x6 Hevi. So 3" shell. How much shot?

i always stay with 1 5/8 or 1 3/4 ounce.i read a article years ago and after a study the 1 5/8 load outperformed the larger charge ( i have seen less flyers) with 1 5/8 ounce but 1 3/4 is ok also.i believe less is best sometimes and up to a point.i always shoot for 1200 fps also.

It's also the only way to stay within SAAMI pressure specs with HS. I was unable to keep 2 oz under 14K psi @ 1200 fps in the 3" hull when I was messing with it a lot.
