Looking for a 1/2 oz. or less subgauge waterfowl recipe

Post by Jim Spencer » June 24th, 2017, 6:12 pm

I want to shoot ducks and geese with TSS this winter but don't see the need for the large shot charges we're all shooting at turkeys. I've got 28 gauge recipes calling for 9/16, 13/16 and 7/8 oz. but nothing lighter, and the only ,410 recipe I have calls for 13/16.

Idealy, I'd like a 3/8 load for .410 and a 3/8 or 7/16 oz. for 28 gauge. Since I'll be shooting 10s, there'll be plenty of pellets for a decent waterfowl pattern. Anybody know where I can find such load recipes?

Thanks in advance.

Jim
Hawglips, Hal Abbott has loads. Contact him and he will help you.

There are no numbers on any of my clocks below 8. Then all of a sudden, 2 days before turkey season they appear. Then right after the season they disappear.
What's up with that

Jim

I believe the loads you want are mixed. The ones I know of are a duplex of steel and tss, maybe 1/4oz tss with 1/2oz of steel. The problem I hear about, with loads the size you speak of is low pressure.

Thanks, all. I've been in touch with Hal, that's where I got the loads I mentioned. Was just hoping for something a little less spendy. I don't mind launching $5 worth of shot at a turkey, but I don't think a duck needs that much killing. Maybe I'll just have to learn to shoot better.

Hal does have a .410 1/2oz load for waterfowl. Works good!

My kids shoot a TSS 1/2oz load out of the 28ga. It was designed for low recoil so it won't cycle a semi auto, but works great in a break action. My load is based off of Hal's 3/4oz lilgun TPS load that I just left out 1/4oz of tss and added 2gr of lilgun. Velocity on this load ended up at 1200 fps. Virtually no recoil in this load. We load #9s and took ducks and geese with this load last year. Very effective.

Jim, I've got a .410 load at 3/8 oz as we speak, that I'm waiting on the lab report for.
