"Hairy" Roll Crimp?

Post by BumbleFoot » May 21st, 2017, 9:34 am

Here's my first stab at a roll crimp...

Crimp itself seems fine, but every shell came out with a skirt or fringe of shredded plastic. Didn't seem to matter how long I let the crimp die spin when initiating contact with the hull. Lightly lubed the upper exterior of each hull.

Is this normal, crappy equipment, or just poor technique?

What brand of roll crimper are you using?

Never seen that. See if you have a burr on the crimper

I have a Precision in 12 and 20 ga. and they both work great, like turkey_slayer said, you may have a burr on it.

I too just got a precision crimper. Mine leaves a ring around the hull and 1 tiny hair like strand 2". Other than that, they look, cycle and fire great.
The string comes right off with your finger in 1 strand.. ?????? It sounds like a burr on the end.

Try running it counter clockwise.

check and see if it is twisting the hull (check lines in hull) and see if they line up or are twisted.if not twisted then taper the edge of roll crimper (sharp edge or burr).

Unfortunately that's not an option with my drill press. I'll instead try running a handheld drill in reverse to see if that helps.

On a couple of finished shells, the lines or ribs of the hull are clearly slanted in a clockwise direction. Would that suggest twisting and, if so, what's the likely cause?

Gotta give a shout out to Trent at Precision Reloading. He's sending me a replacement die along with a return label for the possibly defective one. Agreed that it was likely a burr causing the shredding of the hull. Moreover, they tested out the replacement unit this morning for quality assurance.
