20 ga PA-459 choke recommendations

Post by firedup »

Set up a Weatherby PA-459 Tactical in 20ga for turkey hunting last year. It has the 18 inch barrel. Using Carlson .555 and / or .575 chokes so far. Vortex venom site. Shooting both handload TSS #9 and Federal TSS #9. Both shoot decent patterns (250 - 280's with .555) with either choke and killed several turkeys with it. I expected better numbers tho ….effects of the shorter barrel?

But everyone knows how it goes. Looking to try a few different chokes before turkey season. I have seen some nice patterns with the PA- 459 and SA 459 but not a lot with the tactical barrel. Recommendations on a choke?

Thanks!

TimT has the compact he bought off of here in the classifieds last year. I think it’s a 20”?
555 indiancreek and with the 90/93 foxtrotammo I sent him it was in the 350’s consistently

I've got the Weatherby PA-459 TR which has the pistol grip and am shooting a reload of 1 5/8 oz , 9's w/a SumToy .562-5 and average 315 in 10" w/ a very even 260 in the 20" which I consider a very forgiving turkey killing pattern especially when utilizing the ghost ring sights.

Thanks for the input. I have been leaning toward the IC .555 and the Sumtoy .562. Seems they are consistently good in about everything. 315ish and a good even 20" would be great. Hard to find an IC right now. Seems its "seasonal". I also carry a more open modified choke with me and when I get caught in a tight patch I just swap to the more open choke.

I have the same gun and tried a trulock and Sumtoy .562-5. I went with the Sumtoy but I was shooting fed HW #7’s. Gonna start handloading TSS now, and see Sumtoy’s still a good bet for this gun. Love the gun and pounded my first double 2 years ago at 50 with the combo.

Best of luck
