18.5” 20ga choke recommendations

Post by bushangler »

I recently bought a mossberg 510 in 20ga with an 18.5” barrel. I got this as my mountain turkey gun for its light weight. Where should I start with for a choke I would like to shoot longbeards in 5’s or 6’s. I don’t care about super tight, I won’t shoot over 30yds. Tried the factory mossberg and wasn’t happy with the uneven pattern with any of the 10 different loads I tried. Leaning towards Jebs headhunter as I’ve had good luck with them in other guns, any others I that are a better option?

Thanks for the info, what constriction is yours and what are you shooting?

What do you shoot through it? And how’s it pattern? Also have you shot it through a chrono to check velocity?

I handload and I don’t remember the construction on that one. I’ll have to get the calipers out later.

I run 1 3/8 oz 9’s or 1.5oz 9’s. The 1 3/8 does a little over ~200 in 10” and the 1.5 oz does ~300 in 10”.

I would shoot a IndianCreek 555 in that short barrel. If your shoot a faster load like the HotRod 1 3-8oz I would go with a 562

I’m curious why you suggest the tighter choke for the shorter barrel?

As a rule, shorter barrels need more constriction than longer barrels to achieve similar patterns (although of course there are exceptions to every rule).
