Remington 870 16ga advice
Guys,
Been on the prowl for a Remington 870 16 gauge express shotgun for a few years now, and I finally lucked out this past week. Got a very nice used Remington 870 express 16 gauge shotgun with a 23 inch pipe and threaded for Remchokes.
I wanted the threaded choke barrel so that I could change chokes as needed. I am going to turn this into a dedicated turkey gun, with Boyd's sterling thumbhole, forend, and an aimtech saddle mount with a vortex venom reflex sight.
I now have the entire 870 set, one in every gauge, so this was an important purchase for me.
I am going to shoot Hal's 1 7/8 ounce TSS 9 load in this shotgun. My question for you guys is in reference to chokes. Seems some have shot the Comp-n-choke .615 and have had good luck. I also notice Trulock offers a .610 turkey model. For those that have experience with a 16 gauge and TSS, which choke would you run? Trulock .610 non ported or Comp-n-choke .615 turkey choke? Give me some advice guys, I'm all ears! Thanks!

Carlsons make a choke for the 16? I know several who get good patterns from a Carlsons. I personally would get a IndianCreek if one was available for a 16

please post up pictures of that 16 when you get it finished
Re: Remington 870 16ga advice
I have the same gun, and shot it with a comp n choke.615, and it was way to tight for my liking. I would get a SumToy .630, and you should be at 300 + in the 10” at 40 yards with tss 9’s.
Re: Remington 870 16ga advice
Trulock .615! Now obviously a completely different gun, but since I’m a 16 gauge freak I had to share. Cannot wait to see pics of your gun!!!VALongbeard wrote:Guys,

Re: Remington 870 16ga advice
Thanks for the input guys!
2shooter, that comp-n-choke .615 pattern is unreal. The thing I like honestly like about that pattern is the 20 inch is not terribly sparse, but you better be on them with the aiming point though. Was yours a 23 inch barrel also? Just curious.
It will probably be February or so before I post pics. I am going to send the gun off for a brand new bluing job, then put it all together. Usually a 2 month to 3 month lead on my guy that blues for me. I am stoked about this gun to say the least. I am actually going through the gun piece by piece and fully restoring it. Will have a special place for me, that is for sure. Thanks again guys.

William at Sumtoy made me a 16ga choke for my Remington 870 back in February of 2013. He broke an expensive drill bit making it (sorry William)! I’m pretty sure it’s a .615 restriction. I can’t recall the pellet count but I think I was getting mid-300s in the 10. Hal and Precision Reloading helped me on a 1 7/8 oz TSS load because there wasn’t a proven recipe at the time.
I killed a couple of birds using Hevi Shot that 2013 season before switching to TSS that summer and then finished my Grand Slam with it in 2014. I have killed several birds over 40 yards with it including the last time I shot it in May of 2016 in Maine and downed this bird at 60:

I agree with the compnchoke .615 it works great in my 870 16ga express.
Get there early, stay late, sit still and don't use weather as an excuse to stay home.

Re: Remington 870 16ga advice
Im in the same boat, i picked up a nice lightly used 870 express 16 ga youth over the summer. I couldn't pass it up! "For my son to use when hes old enough" is the excuse i gave to the wife LOL. I plan on running apex tss in it. After talking to apex and trulock, i settled on there extra full .630 choke.Hopefully it patterns well with TSS #8. Well life and a new baby got in the way of me completing my gun. I've got a trs-25 red dot mounted on it. Also got a patriot sear spring to put in it. Now all i need is a new stock and some apex shells. I think im going with the knox gen3 stock as itll be a great stock for me and my boy when the time comes. Those are some killer patterns you guys are getting with the 16s!

Let us know how that Trulock .630 does!Strutbuster935 wrote: ↑December 31st, 2018, 3:40 pm Im in the same boat, i picked up a nice lightly used 870 express 16 ga youth over the summer. Has anyone got around to patterning a .630?

Re: Remington 870 16ga advice
Well i finally got my 870 16 ga youth put together! I put the knoxx gen3 stock on yesterday. I snuck out before dark after deep cleaning my barrel this evening and fired my first ever shots of TSS! I only fired 3 rounds as i was making final adjustments to the red dot, i got 185 in the 10" @ 40 with apex #8s, and 241 in the 10" @ 40 with apex #9s. Im shooting the trulock extra full .630 choke. I was hoping for a little better numbers especially with the #9s.The #8 pattern was a nice and even pattern all the way out to the 20" circle, but i was hoping to be getting 200+ with the #8s and 300+ with the #9s... Im thinking i need to tighten up the choke a little... What do you guys think?? I will send a few more downrange here and see what i get for #s, it may settle in a little after being freshly deep cleaned, who knows.

I would think a tighter choke would benefit

Re: Remington 870 16ga advice
See if Trulock will swap you out for a .610 turkey choke if you are eligible. I bet it will get you where you want.
