Anyone shot Hals MOA load in autos
I have a 1187 compact and wonder if it can handle the MOA load?
Re: Anyone shot Hals MOA load in autos
I shot it a few times out of a Mossberg SA20. Crazy patterns! I don’t think it would cycle from mag to the chamber.
I still sticking with 1 7/16oz.

10 4. Just wondering if the 1187 can handle it strength wise. I dont wanna break anything.
Re: Anyone shot Hals MOA load in autos
NO! It can't
I gotta good friend who learned from experience.
Something about the barrel separates at the vent?
Shot it out my Affinity and know several others who do as well. it won't feed from mag to barrel with roll crimp.

I'll second what jstocks said about the good friend who learned from experience. I saw the aftermath and it wasn't pretty. He does shoot it in an 870 without issue thus far though.

I shot it twice in a Escort standard magnum 20ga semi-aoto, and it broke the magazine tube!!! Shot it in a 870 with a 21” barrel, and it kicks between a 3” & 3 1/2” 12ga!!! I would stick with the Big 20 Lil Zip load!!!!
Re: Anyone shot Hals MOA load in autos
If I had a pump I'd shoot it all day long and never look back. Just not in the auto.

Re: Anyone shot Hals MOA load in autos
I personally wouldn't shoot it through anything tighter than a .575 or .580, I know a fellow that put five or six through a IC .555 and it swelled the tube so bad he had to heat the end of the barrel with a torch to remove the tube. As far as recoil, I shoot Hal's Lil Zip and I don't think the MOA20's recoil is any worse but I only ever shot one of the MOA20's and the Lil Zip's pattern smoked it in my M2.

Re: Anyone shot Hals MOA load in autos
Perhaps because the 3" 20 is designed for 1&1/4 oz of shot (though I realize the Fed HW held 1&1/2) and the MOA is pushing 2&1/8 oz. BTW, pressure is not a part of recoil calculations...just gun weight, powder weight, ejecta weight, and velocity. The gas or inertia systems and return springs in autos are tuned for a given amount of recoil. When you exceed that by a large amount, the bolt is driven rearward at excessive velocity overpowering the return spring and causing great stress on stocks, bolts, action bars, magazine tubes, etc.Fl strutter wrote: ↑July 19th, 2018, 10:19 pm Thanks guys. Thanks. I'm currently shooting a great 1 5/8 load but was wanting to try a bigger payload to fill the 20 inch a little more.

Re: Anyone shot Hals MOA load in autos
No offense to you or to Hal intended, but 1&5/8 oz is already a very robust load for a 20 ga. If you need/want more, perhaps you should consider a 12 ga.Fl strutter wrote: ↑July 20th, 2018, 7:55 am Thanks. Already got a 12 and a good load for it. Just like tinkering and always trying to improve.

I shot it through my Weatherby SA459 and it blew the bolt handle off. Way to stout for me. I'll stick with something that has a little less kick. No way it would cycle from the magazine to the chamber.

Re: Anyone shot Hals MOA load in autos
I noticed that a few friends guns were pulling the lip off the hull and some primers were partially backing out on some 20 ga 1 5/8 oz loads last year. kept looking and determined this only happened with semi autos in our group.

Yeah I'm in the not for me camp.
1-5/8 ounce is the highest I go in 20.
I reach for a 12 above that.

Re: Anyone shot Hals MOA load in autos
I've shot several different 1 5/8 loads in my 1187 and haven't had any issues and hulls look fine. I do not have the barrel seal activator in it tho. Spoke with rem and even tho manual doesn't say remove it in the 20 gauge for heavy loads they said it was to be removed on any heavily loads and all shots have been fine so far.

I had the same problem with another load, blew the bolt handle out 3 times. Backed the powder charge off a bit, and all good for now.

I was having the same problem!!! this cured it!!Fl strutter wrote: ↑July 20th, 2018, 2:30 pm I've shot several different 1 5/8 loads in my 1187 and haven't had any issues and hulls look fine.
