If you had to choose one 410
If you had to choose one 410
I'm looking to get a 410 and do the works on it. What would you pick? I'm a little hesitant on the single shot yildiz now with the trigger/closure issues. The o/u are intriguing, but curious how they may do with a ff3 on top. My other interest in an 870. I want something durable and something that comes threaded for chokes.
Re: If you had to choose one 410
William at Sumtoy likes the Midland single-shot. It's the same design as the Yildiz which in turn was a copy of the Beretta 412. It's below 5 lbs. in weight. Unlike the Yildiz, the action isn't scaled for gauge and the same action can use 12 and 20 gauge barrels. The action is steel and not alloy as is the Yildiz. Blued. Not threaded for chokes, but even if you had to have it choked, it would still be less costly than other options. It has a manufacturer's recommended price of $150 but is available for less at various retailers. It comes in 18.5" and 22" barrels.
I don't know how widespread or common the FTF issue is with the Yildiz. I was amazed to hear of the number of conversions that has been done with the little gun. The echo chambers of the internet can sometimes cause concern that is sometimes over blown. Gil

Well, it's like this: When you sling the Yildiz single barrel over your shoulder it disappears. I let someone use mine and they said they had to keep checking to make sure it was still there.

Howl, you are preaching to the choir..Gil
Re: If you had to choose one 410
I have an 870 410 with a fixed full choke. I shot a few patterns between 135-140 with shooters load. I suspect one could do better with a sumtoy choke but I am very happy with it.

My choice of the Yildiz .410 is based on it's light weight. It's a pragmatic choice. I am lazy and don't like to carry a lot of weight. Its killing patterns with TSS 9 or 9.5 or 10 are better than my old 12 gauges shooting the old lead loads of any size shot in any length shell. There is nothing as light. Mine rigged out minus sling with red dot is 3 lbs. 4 oz. My two other .410 single shots, one a Baikal MP18 is 5 lbs., 11.7 oz. (with red dot); the Savage 220B, 5 lbs., 13 oz., no red dot.
The same two guns' 20 ga. versions are 5 lbs. 6.7 oz. (Baikal with red dot), and the Savage 220A weighs 5 lbs. .5 oz. or 12.5 oz. lighter than the .410. To carry those two .410's would not be practical when the 20 ga. guns have better hunting patterns outside the 10" ring.
In looking at 870 prices in .410, Bud's has the youth Express model for $434, weight 6.5 lbs. Academy has the Wingmaster for $699, weighing 5,75 lbs. As you may know, there is a difference in quality between the two. If I were looking for light weight, the only reason I'd want to carry a .410, neither satisfies that choice for me. One could buy 3 Yildiz single shots and get change back for what the Bud's 870 costs or 5 Yildiz for what the Academy Wingmaster costs. I'm sure there would be at least one the Yildiz that would work as advertised and maybe all of them would.
The heavier guns would absorb the punch of the .410 loads better than the lighter weight Yildiz, but then, the felt recoil to me is not bad with the Yildiz. OMMV.

Re: If you had to choose one 410
Weight is not a major concern, functionality is. I'm a little scared of the yildiz , but do have a buddy thag is supposed to be getting some ordered and I will get one if he gets them. Ok can't believe how high these little guns are! I really want an 870, but the price is high.
I may end up selling one of my short 835 that I don't shoot much any more and do a 410 build. That's why I'm looking now and asking questions

The Mossy 500 is a reliable inexpensive .410. $279 at Academy. Academy as you know won't ship. Cheaper than Dirt has them as well, but higher. I see they have the lightweight 870 at 6 lbs, too. They ship.

Got a buddy picking me up a yildiz today. Guess I'll start with it and hope it serves me well.
Re: If you had to choose one 410
I will get it to William over the summer for some work and hopefully he knows a fix for the trigger issue, if it's an issue for me, which I hope it's not
Re: If you had to choose one 410
I went with a Remington 870. I liked the idea of a light weight single shot then I got to thinking what If I need a quick follow up shot for what ever reason.
I’ve never been a Mossberg fan and the Browning’s seems too pricy for me. I over paid for my 870 410, but I paid $350 used.
