16ga double in North Georgia
16ga double in North Georgia
Got these 2 in Habersham County Ga. on National Forest Land this morning at about 10:30 with my ole Savage 220A 16ga!!!
Got one to gobble about 9 AM that was about 600 or 700 yards away in some steep mountain country!!! I knew it would take a long time to get to him, so I called as I closed the distance. It was a slow go up, and down the mountains till I got to a ridge that ran off the main ridge. I set up, and called to hear one even further that the first one.
After a few minutes of hearing nothing I fell asleep, and was woke up by a gobble at about 100 yards up the main ridge above me, and still over the crest of the ridge. I jumped up ran as fast, and quietly as I could up the ridge to gain some elevation! I stopped, and finely got a few yelps out as I caught my breath, and the 2 gobblers gobbled still on the other side of the ridge. I moved up to a log, and set down which put me 30 yards from the top. I yelped, and they had gone away, but moved more closer to the top.
I knew I was as close as I could get, and hoped they would come off the side of the ridge to where I was. I yelped, and they were on the way. They came to 20 yards, and the ole Savage barked, and one was down. The other one took off back up the ridge, so I called, and he gobbled. I saw him coming back down the ridge, and when he was at about 30 yards I saw how big he was, and the ole Savage barked again. Down went number two doing back flips all the way to the bottom of the mountain!!! In the mountains no pain no gain!!! Got to love it, or hunt flatland!!! When the wife goes it’s flatland, but I love the mountains!!!

I think either of those turkeys would rank as my best set of spurs. Absolutely awesome.

Congrats, Steve. Nicely done.
I’m all for mountain hunting.
As long as it’s all downhill!!
No mountain climbing turkeys in my future.
Come to think about it... There are none in my past either!!
Way to go!!

May I assume you're not here to inquire about the alcohol or the tobacco?
